Hi Lisa, just curious, what didn't you like about the BWPPI? We booked 6 nights there, have never stayed there, usually at the Fairfield, a little bit further down Harbor, but we wanted to try something a lot closer & with more room since we have teenagers. If you are comparing it with the DLH, maybe that's the reason, since DLH is considered a deluxe property, right?
I will try to find a link to the review I posted of it when we came back last summer. It isn't because I was comparing the BWBBI to the
Disneyland Hotel--I know there is no comparison there. We have also stayed at Howard Johnsons on Harbor, and I thought Hojos was great. The walk is a little far, but the rooms were clean and super spacious, the beds excellent, overall it was a great value for the the price and location. Hojos isn't the same experience as staying at DLH or GC, obviously--but you know that going into it. The walk seemed farther to me than the one from the Disneyland Hotel, but that could be because you have to walk down Harbor Blvd, which is very busy, smelly (bus exhaust and masses of people and fast food), and just...meh. But overall, I would stay at Hojos again (actually I am sure I will happily at some point in the future)--but would never stay at the BWPPI again.
The BWPPI was just depressing looking to me. The room was dark, and the bathroom smelled like mildew or mold. The beds were very hard. I shared a bed with my youngest daughter and we both noticed it. My other daughter slept on the pull out sofabed, and she actually cried in the morining because it was so uncomfortable all night. I sat on it while eating breakfast, and the springs hurt so badly that we folded the couch up so we could sit on the cushions. Speaking of the cushions, they were very dirty! Like you are afraid to touch them dirty.
The airconditioner was not central air--it was the wall unit kind. It was very noisy and blew cold air just on one spot (actually on my daughter while she tried to sleep) and didn't circulate well.
It is a motor coach style motel, where you pull your car up to park near the room. So our door opened on to the parking lot area. It was noisy most of the day, but the worst was night. There was a drunk couple who were swearing and having a very loud argument outside our door at 2:30 am. It sounded like they were arguing over money or drugs (or both). I asked them to keep it down (opening the door just a crack), and they both came up to the door and yelling into it. My girls were both very scared and I called the front desk. Soon after they left, and then I heard the police come. I don't know if it was the front desk who called the police or not.
We actually checked out that morning, and checked into the DLH for a few nights. Obviously the difference in our experience was two different worlds. But most of all it drove home to me that we take a lot of time and effort to get to disneyland, and it really does matter to us where we stay when there. It doesn't have to be on property, but it should feel clean and safe and pleasant.
I can't comment on the free breakfast that was offered at the BWPPI, because we didn't eat there. I had read many reviews of people getting food poisoning at Captin Kidds, and that is where you are suppose to get the free breakfast. The restaurant is located next door to the motel.
I grew up going to all different levels of motels and hotels. We often stayed at Motel 6 when I was a child, so I don't have this mentality of only wanting to stay at the best. The more I go to Disneyland, the more I realize that the area disneyland is located in is not really that nice or scenic. What makes it vacation material is the disney atmosphere, and you really get that staying in on of the 3 resort hotels. This makes it more of a real vacation for us. I think there are some off property hotels that do a very good job of creating a nicer atmosphere as well. Maybe your experience at the BWPPI will be much better than mine. We could have just gotten a not so nice room, and stayed on a bad night. It happens.
