do to an error my son did not get registered for the Oct. Sat's that he wants to take. Guidance counselor said you can do a walk in. Apparently you pick a less popular location and get there early with a few extra bucks. Has anybody ever done this with success.

From what I've heard, he must leave early, and be prepared to try several sites. It may be very frustrating, and it may not work.
Depending on how well he handles stress, it may be to his benefit to take the test in November (if it's offered then) than to risk whatever might happen if he takes it while nervous, frustrated, and tired.

My brilliant but disorganized older child did. You pay approximately double b/c there is a late fee and a walk-in fee. He didn't care since I was paying it. Interestingly, that was the only time he took the SAT, too.

Your son's guidance counselor should be able to tell him whether he will probably get in. If the test isn't at his school, the counselor should be able to pick up the phone and find out from a counselor at another school.

As someone who used to regularly give the SAT's at a site, I can tell you that we did have a few students do this successfully at our site, and we never had anyone try but fail.
