walk from AKL to park?

We are staying for the first time at AKL in Feb. Can you walk from the hotel to the park? Or is it too far and a bus is needed?

It's not far as the crow flies, but there are no sidewalks, and I don't think pedestrians are allowed along the road. I was riding to the MK from AKL once and the bus driver stopped just as we exited the resort and told two pedestrians to get on the bus. They were not heading in our direction, so he brought them back to the hotel to wait for a bus.

I've heard rumors about a pathway being built, but don't know if they're true.
