I guess I was a bit surprised when I called MS on Saturday and was able to book at BWV preferred view for July 18-22. I had checked the availability thread here and saw that those dates were listed as booked. I assumed there would also be some folks waitlisted for those dates as well being it is only a little more than three months out. When I asked what was available I was told BWV so I booked it.
My question is, is it all in the timing? Do the waitlists not automatically fill? Is it possible I called right after someone else cancelled and was able to book it before someone from the waitlist had their request satisfied?

Someone could have cancelled earlier in the day or there probably are waitlists but for longer stays. Your stay is 7/18-7/22, if someone waitlisted for a slightly different stay (ex. check-in on 7/17 and/or check-out on 7/23) then the waitlist criteria wouldn't match up so they'd remain on the waitlist until ALL their dates matched.
