If I want to waitlist a stay and I have enough points to book at my home resort, but need a few one time use points for the waitlist, how does that work? Do I buy the points before I can waitlist, or do I only buy them once my reservation is available?

A waitlist will not fill if you don't have enough points in your account to cover the increase. You cannot purchase points at the time that MS attempts to fulfill your request. But you cannot purchase OTUPs without making a reservation at the time of purchase.

To get around this, make a reservation that uses the number of OTUPs you need. The reservation must be 31+ days away because you're going to cancel it and don't want the points to go into holding. Once the reservation is cancelled, the OTUPs go into your account and can be used when your waitlist fills.

One problem: OTUPs expire at the end of your UY. They cannot be banked. If your waitlist doesn't fill, you may have wasted your money.
