Waitlist question

DH & I just bought into DVC last year, so our upcoming trip will be the first trip 'home' for us! I'm a little confused about some info I got yesterday when I called MS.

I have reservations already set at AKL, where we own. However, our 7 month window came up and I wanted to try to switch resorts. The rooms we want/need aren't available, so I told her I wanted to waitlist them. She told me I didn't have enough points for it!! Now, I thought that when your waitlist came through, they would cancel your old reservation and apply those points to the waitlisted reservation? (I wanted to waitlist the whole trip, not just day by day). She told me no, that they don't do that - it's up to me to cancel the old reservation.

Something just didn't make sense so I told her I'd have to call back later, and got off the phone before any damage could be done to my existing reservations! lol So, what's the real story? I'm guessing she was wrong, but I'm not sure since I've never done this before...can someone help me out with the right info???

Thanks!

Is this something new? When I have waitlisted in the past, my existing reservation was cancelled as my waitlist came through, whether day by day or all days. The points were automatically transferred to the waitlist ressie.

That's the impression I was under, but like I said, I'm new to all this!! That's why I figured I'd play it safe by hanging up and checking with you guys first. She was adamant that it would be my responsiblity to cancel the old reservation.

Was your AKL ressie w/ developer points? Because you can't waitlist a ressie w/ those. But I'm assuming not as you booked more than 7 mo out in the first place - which can't be done w/ developer points.

Also - is the ressie you're going for outside of AKL the same precise ressie? If you're going from lets say a value at AKL to a BCV ressie, or increasing the number of days, then the point total might be higher.

Otherwise my understanding is that the waitlist is automatic - if it comes through then you get switched from one to the other.

Nope, not booked with developer points. And, we wanted to go from a studio at AKL to a studio at the Boardwalk. We still have over 100 points remaining for the year, so whatever difference there may be would definitely be covered. I always thought it was automatic also and asked her about this...that wouldn't the waitlisted reservation just replace the other? She replied that 'no, we don't handle that - you're responsible for cancelling your original reservation'. Like I said, I just quickly hung up the phone! lol

Hmmm, got me then, I think you may have encountered a CM who was unfortunately mistaken. Then again, I am a husband, so being wrong is an old habit of mine. :)

I would call back, you will get someone different, hopefully. I just did a waitlist last month for July it was day by day but I was on it and if the day came in they had to borrow the points to make the reservation. I did end up with all my days and they did borrow the points when the day came in. You might had, had someone new and they just wasn't sure what they were doing. I have had that happened to me last year with my waitlist, the CM at MS had no clue what he was doing and lost 2 of my days and couldn't get them back. Long story short, he asked another CM to help him and everything was fixed. So Yes, call back something is not right here.

Thanks for the replies! I guess I should be used to getting mixed/incorrect responses when calling Disney. I'll give them another call this afternoon and see what happens this time! :)
