Waiting for any promo vs. renting DVC points

We are renting points for the second time and it was a great experience the first time and is going even smoother this time.

It was a semi-tough decision to rent points for this trip because we had a quick service pin available for our trip. We went back and forth, free food vs bigger room, better amenities, pool with slide, fridge, microwave, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Because you have to pay rack for the room and park tickets for free dining. The package including food would be roughly $2100 (family of four for 6 nights) Then I looked at renting points OKW for four nights with a break in the middle at POP (Weekend is too $$$$ for me at DVC but maybe a code will come out to change my mind) $715 room (6 nights) and $1100 tickets = $1815. Difference of $285.

I am aware that we can't eat for $285 but we always rent a car when we go to Disney and $285 will get us quite a bit of groceries and we'll split some meals at the park as well. We are not big eaters and the last time we went to Disney on the dining plan, I was sick half the time cause I felt like I had to eat my "free" money's worth. We split most meals typically.

So to sum it up for my family, we would rather stay most of our nights in a hotel with queen vs double beds (my husband is 6'4", the queen bed is much better then the double at POP) and a more relaxed atmosphere then to eat for free at the parks. Also we will be there on one of the busiest times of year and we plan on spending a lot of time at the resort, we've been to Disney several times and don't fee the need to spend from dawn to after dark at the parks, we used to pack as much into every day at the parks but we've been more relaxed on recent visits since we know we'll be back in a year or so :)

As to getting my rental. I wasn't the first one to jump on a post and my owner was still able to meet my request. She looked up everything for me and when I changed some things, she was really flexible.

What I look for is someone who isn't brand new to DIS boards and then I will check out some of their other posts to make sure they seem on the up and up. It's been great and remember no matter what you decide, you'll be in Disney so it can't be too bad.

this is a great point!!

i always hear "it's so easy" but then realize i'm the 457th person in line.

any DVC points-renting tips from the experts out there?

In my experience, the best advice I can offer would be to plan as far in advance a possible. The earlier you can plan your trip, the better because availability can be tricky. Just because disneyworld.com says there are Beach Club Villa studios available doesn't mean they are available through DVC.

I have also seen people be told that there is no availability for their dates and then they turn around and ask someone else to check for them... The "Reservation Availability" thread provides some insight on what is available.

I have rented points numerous time from other people and I have also rented my points to others numerous times, so feel free to ask any questions you may have!
