Waffle House Rant

Thought I would run out and get some take out for dinner ~ sick of leftovers!! I drove through our city and the ONLY thing open is Waffle House. I go in and place a to go order. I proceed to wait an hour and no order!! Meanwhile, the "clientelle" and the "waitresses" (all of whom have cigarettes in their front shirt pockets) are arguing with each other. I ask the "waitress" how much longer it will be until my order is ready, and she just looked at me, walked to the back room, and began smoking a cigarette!!! So I left. I understand it's Christmas Day, and I knew that going in. I had planned to leave a HUGE tip as a "Merry Christmas" as I know it must be rough working on the holiday. I seriously don't know how they are making ANY tips with the attitude they all had!! AND, I'm embarrassed for our city and state! Many travelers are passing through (we're right off I-65) and this is the representation they get about Alabama. So sad.

A Waffle House just isn't a place to go for good service. Sorry you had such a terrible time there on Christmas. Are their any Chinese restaurants near by? Most of ours are open today.

Yes, it was very crowded at first. I kept thinking surely my order is next. I kept saying to myself - I've been in here 20 minutes and don't want it to be for nothing; I've been here 40 minutes, etc. etc.

Yes, we have 3 or 4 Chinese places, but they were closed. Waffle House and the Raceway gas station were the ONLY 2 businesses open in the entire town!!

Waffle houses are so ghetto! That sucks though I mean they could have been a little nicer about the service and stuff. We went to IHOP for breakfast this morning, Denny's and waffle house were also open.

I would have walked out too or talk to a manager. We don't have the Waffle House chain here in NY, but we have visited them in a few other states. Usually they are pretty good and are pretty reasonable with their prices. Sorry about your experiece.

We had a similar experience with a Denny's on the way down to Virginia earlier this year. The place was not crowded at all (actually, there were hardly any customers there). We got seated pretty quickly and placed our drink and lunch order. The drinks came fast, but our food was 45 minutes to 1 hour later. We had checked with the waitress a few times and she didn't get back to us. DH finally talked to the manager (who was real nice). Turns out one of the other waitresses picked up our order and gave it to another customer. Neither the customer or waitress said anything about it (DUH!!). The manager gave us our lunch for free because of that and apologized for the inconvience.

While we were waiting for our lunch order, other customers were coming in for lunch. Now, remember, I mentioned that it was not crowded at all. People were waiting too long just to be seated that most of them left to go somewhere else. Another family that came in was seated behind us. When she found out how long we were waiting just for our lunch, she paid for her drinks and left. DH and I vowed never again to go to a Denny's after that and prior experiences with the Denny's chain.

Had that happen at a Waffle House and it was empty. Got the meal free.

We've always been lucky at the Waffle House. Several years ago, my sons were both away for Christmas day (visiting other relatives), and I was pretty depressed about it. My husband and I ended up going to WH for cheese eggs instead of cooking a big dinner. Our waitress was really funny and earthy, and I expressed my condolences that she was having to work on Christmas Day and be away from her kids. She said, "Nahhh, I was sick of 'em anyway!"

We left her a huge tip.

It didn't have anything to do with my order (other than the fact I was ignored so the waitress could go smoke in the back room), I was just stating a fact while describing the waitresses. How many women do you know who carry packs of cigarettes in their front pockets? I just thought it was odd.

The WH we went to here in AZ was so gross/dirty. I thought I had heard good reviews for the WH. I was not impressed.

We were driving home on Christmas Day from Ky to Savannah and stopped to eat at a waffle house and people were lined up out the door......luckily we found a Dairy Queen that was open down the street.

My best friend does. I've never thought anything of it. We're nurses so we like to keep our cigs handy in case we have a chance to get away from the floor for a few minutes. I carry mine in the pocket on the leg of my scrubs. BF only has her shirt pocket because her unit has to wear the hospital's scrubs.
