I've stayed at both AKV and VWL, and though I agree with the pp regarding the newer decor being at AKV, I still enjoy VWL more. Here's why:
- location to MK, either by bus or boat (though I often drive)
- doesn't feel as isolated. . .AKV has only bus service (or you drive), and it's only close to Animal Kingdom, while VWL is near the Poly, GF, and CR.
- nature trails that lead to FW are good for a romantic walk in the evening or a good run in the mornings
- boating, fishing, and bike rentals are available at VWL
- CS at Roaring Fork is good, and Artist Point (signature dining at WL) is one of the top restaurants on property, though I will thoroughly admit that Jiko is also one of the top restaurants, as well.
- the theming, while dark, is appropriate to the northwest lodge feel the architect Peter Dominick was after. They pipe in stirring western music (think Magnificent Seven, Silverado, and selections from Aaron Copland, the composer), and lamps flicker on the walkway leading between the main WL building and the Villas.
- the geyser is kinda cool, and you can sit on the beach after dark and catch glimpses of Wishes or see the EWP in its entirety on Bay Lake.
As for whether VWL is similar to the GC, the same architect designed both, as well as AKV. Truly, you can't go wrong with either AKV or VWL, though I would vote for the latter. As for BWV, it is lighter and brighter than either AKV or VWL, and it sits on the boardwalk which is going to have a lot more activity and hub-bub than either of the other two
DVC properties. For me, that's a turn-off because after all day in the parks, I prefer some peace and quiet which you get tons more of at either AKV or VWL. And though brighter, I also find the decor at BWV to be a bit more bland and generic. Good luck with your decision!
