How hard is it to book a 1 BR at VWL over Christmas at the 7mo window? Basically impossible?

You might be lucky if you book exactly at 7 months and day by day. We just changed three of our nights at VWL for Thanksgiving from studios to one bedrooms and were successful. The first night we changed was a Saturday, and we used other points for that, so it freed up the VWL points for Sun and Mon to make them one bedrooms at the same time.

Did you ever try to book breakfast at the Castle (before the price change and before the 180 day thing)? It's not quite as bad as that was, but the principal is the same.

Some people got lucky (because they knew how it worked and were willing to keep trying), but most people were unsuccessful. There just weren't as many spaces as people who wanted them.

If you want VWL in December and have to book at the 7 month window, you'll need to call day by day, be willing to use the waitlist and also be lucky. Even then, you may or may not be successful - just like those who wanted to eat with the Princesses.

It's 7 months from check out date, so if your first night is Friday, December 8, then you would call on May 9 (because the check out date for the night of 12/8 is 12/9).

You'll have to call for the last night (which I assume is December 12) on Monday, May 15. That's because May 13 (7 months from check out for the night of December 12) falls on a Saturday and MS isn't open on weekends. If you are also staying the night of December 13, you can call for that date on Monday, May 1 as well.

I actually got lucky a couple of years ago... got a 1BR at VWL for 12/24 to 12/28. We tacked that onto 5 nights in BCV 2BR (with my parents, who left on the 24th).

When I say, lucky... I mean LUCKY... I got it couple of months out... late October I think.

Just waitlisted today for a VWL 1 bdrm for Dec. 3-8. Only had one night available. I'm not one to do day by day because it would be just my luck that 1 night wouldn't come through. So I've waitlisted for the whole stay "automatically". If we get it great, if not that's okay too. We have a reservation at BCV already (our home) and if we have to stay "at home" then we'll be happy too! Just wanting to try VWL for the holidays. We'll see what kind of luck we have. I'll let you know if and when our waitlist comes through.
