VP Shunt

So, DS(10) has a VP shunt, and has had it since a baby. He has hydrocephalus and has never had a problem with the shunt. Quite recently had his annual review with his neurosurgeon and all is good. We've been to WDW twice before and he has been on BTMR, TT, Soarin, Mission Space, EE, etc etc. The only things he really hasn't been on, and this is more him not wanting to, is RNR, TOT and SM. Now it have never occured to me that his shunt might be an issue or concern on 'bigger' rides but DW mentioned it today so I thought, worth to check it out.

We are also doing Universal this year, but I can't seem him wanting to do the likes of Mummy, Rip Ride Rocket, he just doesn't like the big scary rides. But will probably want to try RNR and TOT.

I will contact his neurosurgeon tomorrow(monday) but was looking for some personal feedback.

I haven't been since I had my shunt placed, but was told by my neurosurgeon I could do anything post op that I did pre-op. He said just with an MRI would I have to get the valve re-programmed.
Hopefully your surgeon is able to help!

Thanks Alex, have a call in with the Neurosurgeon, his secretary said they had never been asked about roller coasters before. Anyway he's one of the top guys in Europe so I'll take his word for it when they get back to me.

OK, got word back via secretary, he has no concerns over the rides.

Unfortunately I didn't get to speak to him, but I'm wondering if this could perhaps be due to the fact that he has it so long it's kind of settled and imbedded ??

I have a VP shunt. The only time I have had a problem with a roller coaster bothering mine is when I ride one that has the head restraints...you know the type that come down over your head and rest on your chest. These are usually used for the rough ones. My head will bounce back and forth off each side of the restraint, ultimately hitting my valve, causing a massive headache.

My oldest daughter has a vp shunt and my youngest has a programmable va shunt and the only one that has a problem is the one with the programmable shunt and its only at Bush Gardens if she goes near their one roller coaster that has a high magnetic field.
