I just got vonage, intenet telephone service. Very cheap, and so far no complaints. Anybody else have one of these services.

Yup, have one since December. No complaints here, plus I think my co-worker is going to get it which I'm refering him too. That means if he signs up, I'll get credit for my service!

Woohoo!

We received a ATT/Vonage flyer in mail last week for $30 a month. Still thinking about it.

It bothers me that if we get this internet service and internet goes out, what then?

We don't have cell phones.

Lady who works for us has it. She says she gets some complaints that she sounds like she's in a cave. That's mostly when she calls out of state.

Yeah, my cable went out for a couple of hours today. First time in a long time, but that would have been no phone, right? Can't remember the last time the phone went out though. Also, if the power goes out, no phone with cable phone. Our regular phones stay on then.

We have a cell so no big deal. But if your internet does go down or your electric the calls and messages are forwarded to your online site so you can look them up.

If you lose power, you're service will be out too but your internet service may have generators (ours does) at the local "hubs". I have all my PC stuff (PCs, routers, modem, vonage box) on UPS battery back up systems.

Even if you have land line service but only have cordless phones, you're out of luck too.

Luckily, I have a cell phone from work for a back up.

Your regular phones only work if you have a non-cordless model.

Get a UPS battery back up device for your stuff. They're under $100 for a nice size one that will power a lot of small stuff like a cordless phone or your vonage equipment for hours.

We have had Vonage for about 6 months and really love it. I just had a friend sign up and we got 2 months of free service! So far so good!

We've had it for a couple months, and we're getting rid of it.

The sound quality is terrible for us, and we lose service constantly. One time it was out for 5 days. It's not that big a deal to dh because he works 10 hrs a day, but for me at home...to not have a phone to be able to reach people is really a hindrance.

Also, last week there were 14 women I needed to call for a church thing. I was able to get through to each of them once, but only 2 of them were home. The rest I left messages. Then the phone went down for a couple days, and I couldn't get calls from any of them.

I'm really glad you all have had good luck with it. I do totally think it's the future of phone service...but it will have to improve substantially imho first. I can't wait to get our landline back up and running.

My boyfriend has Vonage. He loves it. He referred my brother and sister in law and also her parents. They all love it. I'm not home enough to have a home phone service right now between work and school. Cell phone is enough for me but I've heard nothing but goood things about Vonage...and I love their commercials!

Silly question alert..........

We need to have at least 3 or 4 working phones in our house. When you use one of these services, are you allowed to have more than one phone for the same number?

The only complaint I have is that my TIVO doesn't like it that much. I know there is a "fix" for it, but I don't know what it is. I usually call DH and rant. Good excuse for him to come home. "Sorry, I have to go fix my wifes TIVO. Since he works with a bunch of techies, they understand! :teeth:

Yes, the Telephony Adapter can be wired at the patch panel in your house. This is where each outlet is wired to and connected to the incoming phone service. Of course, if your cable or DSL modem is far away from this panel, you will have to run Ehternet or a phone line to connect the two.

We've been using it in the Florida house and LOVE it! We have three cordless and one hardwired phone attached to it. The sound quality is as good as a landline. It's been very reliable for us, I'm glad we made the decision to use it. Our power is really stable, all underground, and even during the hurricanes it wasn't out for more than a couple hours at a time.

We have it and love it. I will never go back to normal phone service.

I have Vonage... it's good... I live in the middle of no-where so I waited until we had Cell service as a backup... the kewl thing about VOIP (any voip) is that you can basically take it with you on business trips (as long as where you are going has internet) and if you take it to Disney and plug into the their internet offering in your room, you basically only pay for the internet in the room when making long distance calls home.... of course if you take it with you on vacation, set it up to send all incoming calls to voicemail, and use it for outgoing calls, since hey, you are on vacation! ;)

one other gotcha is the E911 process... Vonage is like the only one right now that offers E911 service and a VOIP 911 call doesn't go to where it would if it were a landline.

Thanks,
Paul

Also a plus if you have family far away, perhaps military families. You can choose your phone number and area code. So you could pick a number that is the same as people who call you the most so they aren't calling long distance.

I make all of my long distance calls from my cell right now. So, if I were to get this, I could use my home phone for those and go to a cheaper Cell Plan and still end up paying a lot less in combined charges.

Perhaps. The unlimited plan at Vonage is $25. What are you paying now for your cell? One nice thing about vonage is you can have your cell phone (or another phone) ring simultaneously when someone calls your Vonage number. If you cell is off, or out of range, the call will most likely roll to your cell voicemail.
