Volume on my computer is gone-- Help!

I have a dell laptop (if that helps). The sound is gone and I can't seem to figure out why. The mute isn't on or anything so I don't know. Anyone know how to get it back?

Try rebooting the machine.

I have the same problem! Mine is a Toshiba--one day it was here and the next it was gone and all the settings say it's working fine!

The sound disappeared on my DH's laptop last night. We installed a media player so he could play a DVD. I don't know if this was the solution, but the sound worked after we did this:

start
control panel
sounds and audio devices
on the speaker settings, I clicked the advanced bar
we set it to laptop stereo speakers

It worked after that
