I'm sorry Donna, but for some reason it struck me as really funny that you felt the need to point that out in a joke!! LOL!!!

What should those with depression push, do you suppose?:jester:

I just think it will further disturb them and perhaps add to their problems. ;)

I remember when Laura posted this and was flamed for it...

HOWEVER....I thought it was funny then, and I still think it's funny....life is funny sometimes....enjoy it!

# 12 here, and i dont find anything offending about it!

Or maybe I should say it is the tiny bit of OCD in me.

I have no idea why I'm still thinking about this. LOL

BTW I see the humor in the joke and I can also see how others might feel some pain from it. I figure whatever you feel that's okay with me.

Ya know I was going to hit the back button but I just couldn't do it

I was horribly appauled at these comments. I had such a difficult time thinking that someone could actually get some sort of enjoyment out of this. I think it is so completely wrong. What if

What, ah heck it was hilarious!

:jester:

I'm with Donna. I felt guilty for laughing, because mental illness isn't funny, but this joke is broad parody.

I'm laughing out loud here! Oh and I would be disappointed if someone wasn't offended seems you can't post anywhere on the DIS without offending someone or something. Like a previous poster wrote, nothing better than the back button. :)

Let me take a minute to explain why I do not think this is funny. I realize that I have a choice, I can hit the "back button" and chose to ignore this entire thread, but I am concerned about others. I am aware that mental illness is very serious and it has a true physical cause. Mental health professional work very hard trying to educate the public and trying to make people understand that mental illness is a disease - just like cancer or diabetes. I try to make my DD comfortable with the fact that she has no control over her disease, and she has NO reason to be embarassed. When jokes like this are spread it just reinforces people's beliefs that people who are mentally ill are "crazy." People do not make jokes about cancer patients, or diabetics but mental health is "fair game." All these diseases are serious and can be life threatening and I do not think that there is really anything funny about that.

You have a valid point and I respect your right to your feelings:D

I've been suffering with clinical depression for most of my life. Most of my family is crazy ( sorry, mentally ill) Joking helps me cope and lessens the tension for me and my family !
On the same hand, my father has had prostate cancer for 13 years now. He has done everything from drawing humerous things on his body for the radiation techs to see during treatments to writing funny poems to his doctors and staff. We often joke about his ability to urinate in the dark due to the glow from radiation. He is a survivor due in part to his positive and happy outlook on life. I hope to grow up to be just like him one day!
There is more than a nugget of truth in the saying. "laughter is the best medicine"
Excuse me now while I go take my "happy pills":D :D

I have seen a few on here make jokes about cancer and other diseases. When my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer that is how she and I dealt with it. It works for some.
Mental illness runs deep in my family, my mother committed suicide due to mental illness, my father is well lets not even go there, I dont even have a relationship with him anymore. I strongly believe my brother has mpd. He and I have even joked about his situation.
But with all that being said I do not get upset with the jokes and I dont get upset with those that post them. I think sometimes it is better to laugh than to cry when dealing with mental illness. Maybe I"m wrong but that is how we deal with it.
And did I tell you about my grandmother, fruitier (sp?) than a fruit cake.... I could write a book on my family and mental illness. And then there was my uncle, not only did he kill himself he also killed his brother....
And then there is me... thanks to all the mental genes I inherited I ended up in therapy for 4 yrs. In case your wondering I am fine now.
Aren't you glad you read this long post for nothing.....
Jason hit the back button quick..
Did I tell you about my cousins first wife? She ended up in a mental institution.... well what the heck did she expect, marrying into a crazy family?

:p :p :p :p

Have to agree with perdidobay on this one. While mental illness is very serious, I don't agree that that means that it is completely inappropriate to make jokes about the subject. As was said, laughter is the best medicine, and I think there are many people, with many illnesses and problems, who make jokes about their situation, because it helps to lighten things up. I had an uncle who had to have his foot amputated and, right or wrong, this became the subject of many family jokes - many initiated by him. This does not mean that anyone thought it was funny that he lost his foot. I'll never forget doing the "Hokey Pokey" with him..."put your left foot in"...I'm sure you can all imagine what happened next...

Life is tough - sometimes the only way to get through is to laugh at it.

I'm sorry, but I'm very offended by this. Are you implying that all broads are mentally ill?????

And who the H*** are you calling a broad anyway???

;)

And I wanted to add that I think the joke is hilarious!! Thanks for the laugh TVT!!

I love the DIS, but there are days when I feel like a mass corn-cobectomy would be in order.

(sticks her tongue out at Brenda) if the shoe fits... ;)

I spent four days in the hospital a few years ago. I "only" had pneumonia, but my doctor ran a number of tests to rule out more serious and life-threatening conditions.

I never knew I could crack a joke like that.

seriously, making fun of myself and the situation i was in relieved some of the tension. I could laugh, or I could cry. I chose to laugh.

there's a difference between laughing with someone and laughing at them. this joke is on the border, and I can see why some would find it offensive.
