as long as your phone is triband it will pick a network up, it wont always be your uk network but it will work

mine has always worked.It just converts over to the usa equivelant network.
as Orangetiggs said it has to be tri or quad band to work.
would be cheaper to buy a phonecard if you wanted to just phone home or if going around the parks a set of walkie talkies would be ideal or a trac phone.

Probably worth ringing them to make sure the international call bar is lifted. I did 3 phones in 1 call last week only takes seconds to do.
Other thing is make sure you turn off the phone the put it back on in Florida, dont just put it in flight safe mode or it wont pick up US network.

You do need to call them like Wayne has said - I am on Vodafone and used the mobile to call home in January - it wasn't too expensive. And if you ask the person that you speak to at Vodafone they will be able to tell you the cheapest network to switch your phone to. I also remember that we got texts sent to us if we switched networks to say that it was cheaper or dearer with different networks.

It is loads cheaper to buy a cheap mobile over there to phone back home and uk mobiles. Our phone bill for feb 9 - 16th was 180.00 worth of US & bahamas calls as I forgot the US mobile. We spend quite a bit of time working whilst we are away(perk of having own business)and only spent $60 dollars last year using US mobiles during 3 weeks.

Of course you can but give them sufficient notice before you go to get the roaming feature activated and as others have said you will need a quadband or triband phone. It's easy to find a partner network once you get there, so don't worry, your phone should pick up all of the networks who cover the area your in and ask you to select one. Once that's done you'll need to remember to use the uk dialling code to ring home.
