VMK Question?!?!

I registered my 9 yr old son last night because we are both huge Disney fans. As we played together for a while I was somewhat shocked by other guest, especially girls, asking if he was "taken". Being 9 he thought it was funny and when a girl asked him to follow her he did (I am w/ him the whole time). They ended up in a room and he was asked if he wanted "to do it". I was shocked! I then took over and asked "do what" and she responded "make baby". We then left but were pursued by her until we deleted her from the friend list (didn't know how to do that).
My Q is this, is this normal or did he just go on at a bad time? I feel like I need to be over his shoulder at all times???

Yes, there are girls in VMK that do taken. What is strange about that story is that girls dont ask to make babys. You should have reported her.

It is not only a girl thing. I got involved in vmk because my DD was asked all the time by boys if she was taken or by girls if she wants to be their mummy or if she wants a mummy.
I have it in signature don't care for taken or bay be. It has helped alot. She usually plays game or hang out with friends in her rooms or theirs.

First time ive heard of the make baby.
It is a whole lot less trouble and more convenient when asked "are you taken"
to just say yes.

I do not see that as an untruth because I am "taken" with trading and playing POTC.

Thanks for the ideas. I will add to signature and Kingfoil your right it was make "bay be". I guess its impossible to have a perfect place but he sure likes messing around in there. Its a great incentive to get homework done.
Q: How long does it usually take to get his "screen name"? He is still showing up as a guest. Thanks again!

I got a friend of mine to join the other night and was shocked that within 24 hours her guest named was changed.....Mine took like weeks.

I use the ignore button alot, then you cannot see what they are saying...LOL

That should of been instantly reported, as that is banning material. That sort of thing comes up twice in the VMK Values for pete's sake!

My kids' characters have something along the lines of - I don't trade or friend don't ask

My youngest can't play without parental assistance- so no biggie there

My 8yo plays and is really good about calling for help with us if need be- and her older brother and sister who don't play have even been taught how to report and to click ignore if she needs help.

Fortunately she hasn't been exposed to lots of the same stuff you son did =because she is a girl- I've noticed those little girls in VMK are a lot like the little girls in real life- and are extremely boy crazy- all about having a boyfriend lol- not fun but yeah it does happen

DH has "I'm taken by myself" in one of his mules he plays all the time

I've also noticed that even though it is still there - some of the taken stuff is decreasing- seems more and more kids are adopting the "anti-taken" thing and so it is decreasing a bit- but still there- the bay be thing is another thing all together- very annoying and usually seems to be involved in more "unfair" banning reports than anything else.

I would suggest you do something I've yet to do for my own dd- but need to lol and link up you son with the Dis kids teleporter network- not saying all the kids in it are perfect- but most have their parents here so at least there is more control lol- there is some information about it in the projects sticky at the top of the board.

Other things- teach your son to ignore, walk away and report if needed. And be nearby so that if he does need help he can get it. Oh- tell you son not to trade without your ok too- that unfortunately there are tons of people who try to take advantage- of younger players- that was one thing I noticed with my own kids- I think Too little for you is in both signatures from when the taken stuff was so bad- but they do target them for trade scams all the time- of course often I'm the one behind the controls and I like to play with scammers and report them- so at least I get something out of it- but my dd will not trade and I've had friends she has ignored who were trying to gift her things before lol

It isn't all bad- and the kids do have a lot of fun- and the ones who do like you describe really are a minority- but they are out there- good for you for being involved.

Oh and screen name time varries- used to take a few weeks- but now can even take just a few hours just make sure he logs on frequently- during the week and he should have the real name soon...

Yea, there are always a few bad apples, even in vmk. I'd suggest you put something to this effect in your son's signature -- I don't do the taken thing -- but, it is a given that he will still be asked by those who do not read signatures. At age 9, he probably hasn't much experience chatting with strangers in the virtual world. This will be a learning experience for him and a great chance for you to reemphasize your family values.

We have about 50 children in the network, ranging from 5 to 16 years old. These are kids of DIS members, and a few that are DIS members in their own right, but like the idea of meeting and hanging/playing with other DIS kids. My own DS 16 is there, and I do sponsor several of these kids that are DIS members. To date, Tigressjewel and I have never heard from either the kids or the parents, that there has ever been any issues of the 'taken, babies, puppies, mommies, etc' within the network. These are good kids, that simply want to play VMK.

The first post in the thread will give you the information about our program. Some does need a bit of updating. If you think you might be interested in having your child join, or you simply would like to ask some questions, or even have a tour of the network, please feel free to PM me. I would be pleased to help out in any way I can.

What works for me is that my character (LazyDaisy) has blue skin and hair. Nobody ever asks me to be taken.

Green or pink skin probably works too.

LOL, I was called ugly by someone when I had blue skin and wearing all blue for competition. The person clicked on me to trade which ofcourse I ignored, I was riding a friend ride and I think that is just very rude to click without asking anyway he started calling me ugly and only ugly ppl have certain magic,...
I ignored him, but a word of wise that hurt being called names and I am no kid So if your son tend to be on the sensitive side just let him be the way he is and introduce him to some of the great dis kids.
