Anybody had this? I got some medical results back and my Vitamin D is low. I have a plan in place with my doctor so I'm not one of those "I am bleeding to death so I think I'll go ask the DIS instead of going to the hospital" people. :rotfl: Just curious if others have had this and what symptoms, etc. they had.

Yes, I had it. No symptoms really, of course it showed up at the same time I started having several other health problems, so maybe wouldn't have noticed.

I have broken my ribs several times, but also have osteoporosis, so don't know if that is related.

I took a prescription Vitamin D pill for about a year or so, along with Calcium with Vit. D and Fosamax for the osteoporosis.

My sister has just been diagnosed with low Vitamin D and will be starting the prescription med soon herself. No symptoms.

Well I did have the test but I dont know the results yet. They did it when I was in the hosp. Since I had practically no blood in my body,no B12, no iron, no folic acid etc. I guess it wouldnt surprise the dr. if I didnt have any D either. He gave me vitamin supplements for all the stuff, some prescription, some over the counter. You can see my thread like 2 pages back on how he hasnt called me back yet, sigh, sigh Hope you are o.k.

I was just diagnosed with a vitamin D defiency, which surprised me. I am now on prescription D vitamins. My Dr. said he would check me again in 3 months. What are the symptoms??

I don't know what the symptoms are but my Dr. tested me and the number was supposed to be between 30-35 and mine was 12. I have heard that they are just starting to learn about everything that vitamin D levels are connected with such as breast cancer, stomach cancer, heart and brain functions. I read a report somewhere that this was the new thing Drs. were to be on the look out for.

I too have a plan in place. :)

My sister just went to Life Signs and the results showed her vitamin D level really low. They wrote a prescription for vitamin D too. They must be really checking for this now.

If you don't have enough Vit D, your bones will get soft. Vit D is added to Calcium supplements to help the bones absorb the Calcium.

One very easy way to buid Vit D in the system is to sit in the sunshine, not for long periods of time, but for probably 30 minutes a day.

It can also be associated with other disorders, but this is probably the most common.

Yep, no symptoms here, either - unless some of the things I have been attributing to premenopause are really tied to Vitamin D. Mine was 11, so I have a prescription to take for 6 weeks and then a supplement every day. I'm supposed to get retested, too. This must be the new thing if so many of us are getting the same results.

I'm 50, btw. How old are you all who are getting low numbers? Is it a middle age/old lady thing we can look forward to??

I also think that medical professionals are checking this more often lately.

I'm 51 and my energy level has increased quite a bit and my arthritis pain has decreased pretty dramatically since being on a Vitamin D prescription (50,000 IU once a week) for a while. I'm not sure how it has affected my level yet - I'll be getting lab results soon.

There's a ton of information on the web if you do a search.

Increased Vitamin D levels from sunshine might explain in part why we feel so much better while at Disney! ;)

I think that low Vitamin D is also linked to depression.

There was medical research done on vitamin. D with startling results. They discovered it was much more important than they thought. It is not a vitamin, but a hormone.

Doctors are finding out if you go out in the sunlight hatless and sleeveless shirt for 15 minutes a day, I can't recall if it is every day or three times a week, without sunscreen you will get the required amount of vitamin D. Natural sunlight causes your body to produce vitamin. D.

If you take Vitamin D supplements, take the Omega 3 type. That's the type the body can process.

Here is an article you may want to read.

Get the thyroid checked too...

Calcium def goes hand in hand with this...and I heard about the depression. If you are CONSTANTLY exhausted, just get it checked.

It's working for me now. But when I get tired...look out!

My co-worked has Vitamin D deficiency. Her gynocologist tested her for it and then tried to put her on prescription vitamin D for it. Apparently, another doctor told her that the type some doctors try to prescribe is Vitamin D2. You definitely need to check your scripts and make sure you are using D3. The body can hardly absorb and convert D2 but a lot of docs (who are woefully misinformed on nutrition) don't even know this.

My mother was also tested yet she had a phenomenol number. She gets outside for 45 minutes a few times a week to walk and she consumes a lot of D3 fortified dairy foods so apparently this was enough to protect her.

I haven't had mine tested but will do so soon.

The good new is that over the counter Vitamin D3 supplements are cheap and appear to work very welll.

Most people get no symptoms with the deficiency but it has been linked to increases in many cancers and even flu outbreaks!

Exactly the same for me as far as energy level and prescription strength except I don't have arthritis but my whole body ached, especially at night. Just rolling over in bed hurt. Now I feel so much better.

Mine is a little low...

I was hoping that some posters here would tell the actual prescription or OTC product that they have used. I have looked at Swanson's.com

I have also heard that you need to make sure it is the D3, not the lesser, synthetic D2.

Just an FYI you need to be in the sun without sun screen for the best effect.

If you're fair skinned, experts say going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun—in shorts and a tank top with no sunscreen—will give you enough radiation to produce about 10,000 international units of the vitamin. Dark-skinned individuals and the elderly also produce less vitamin D, and many folks don't get enough of the nutrient from dietary sources like fatty fish and fortified milk.

Now in the winter months for most of us in the US the sun doesnt get high enough in the sky to - radiate- so you need to supplment in the winter months.

Trader Joe's Brand. 1000 mg of vitamin D3 in a softgel. It is added to olive oil in the softgel.

Correct, it should be D3. The body doesn't process the others as well.

Any vitamin store sells them. I take 1,000 IU a day.

I have a Vit D Deficiency. It was discovered at the same time it was discovered that I have Lupus. My Vit D level was at 8 (supposed to be around 30, I think). I started out taking 50,000 IU's twice a week, now, I just take it once a week.

There are no symptoms as far as I know. From what I understand, it is common for Lupus patients to have a Vit D deficiency. For me, I can't use the sun as a way to get my Vit D levels up, because as a Lupus patient, I have to stay protected at all times in the sun (really high SPF sunscreen, hats, etc, etc).
