Visualization is a great way to make a long run manageable, especially if training for a goal event. For Disney it is even better because most runners at Disney are there specifically BECAUSE it IS Disney. I have put links to MapMyRun maps on line a few times just because these maps show a little more detail of the course.

There are a plethora of videos on the YouTube. I have a few that I think are really great… Showing the course, the runners and the crowds… I think these give a great feel for the race in general.

This video has become my all time favorite Disney Marathon video. It shows footage from all three races. It convinced me to purchase a GoPro for the 2013 weekend.

The Family Fun Run is definitely at a relaxed pace. You can see that in fact folks do walk the 5k… Jeff and his son finish in 1:07; so if worried, this should give folks some comfort in knowing that the race is open to those who are 20mm and slower. In the half, the footage starts in the corrals as they work their way toward the front and across the median. Note at Video time 1:39, Jeff is crossing the toll booths just before mile 3. As soon as he passes the booth off to the left you see the results of a fall. Take caution at the tool booth as speed bumps cross each land of traffic just after the booth. It is announced, but not always obvious that the bumps are a car length or so after the booth.

Just past the booths, Jeff runs through a water station. Note that this is a very confusing part of the race and one where accidents can happen. Jeff is stopping at one of the first tables and pulled way off course. Note the stream of runners passing in center course. Stay center course until the later water tables and you will avoid a lot of the traffic snarls seen here. Then just after the stop is the porta potty area… do not run between the lines and the potties, please; though it makes for a good shot of how long the lines are 3 miles into the half.

In the backstage area of MK you will find Cap’t Jack. Note the line. You really must want a photo to stand for the 2-3 minutes it could take. Shortly after, in the GF area you see the Chip and Dale photo op. The CM on the left is shooting with Jeff’s Phone and Brightroom is taking a photo also. Do not depend on Brightroom for character photos as some may not turn out or your bib may be hidden.

If wearing a costume, practice first! At time 6:50, the guy in the large Goofy hat was not running that chipper just before this photo. When I passed him near 16, he was wringing the hat out and not saying very nice things about Goofy. Good to see he got recharged. One would be amazed as to the amount of water that foam will hold.

Lee has several videos on the web. This is one of his better ones. It kind of gives a feel for the ride over to the staging area and then of the half. The really GREAT part of this video is that yours truly is caught just after going through the baggage tents. (1:29) Look for the grey haired guy with a white visor and a gray shirt. I am along the railing keeping folks away from the tent stakes. You will see that I have my visor, sunglasses tucked into the top of the visor, a fuel belt with gels tucked in and a fanny pack.

Brrr 2010, The drops you see in the lights is not rain… it is sleet. Race temps were at freezing for the entire race.

Then comes Sunday. In the 20’s at the start and did not get about the mid 30’s. Note this was the last year of the split start so you see Matt pass to the left of the start get. He is on the ABC corral side of the start and his start was a quarter mile later. Matt has a lot of good shots along Bear Island Road, Mile 13-16 of the old course or 9-12 on the 2013 course. I think the key features these two vids bring out are great photos around every mile post along the course. They have moved in 2013, but they show the course and where it can feel crowded.

Questions? Please feel free to ask

Thanks, Charles!
Wow...that brought back memories of the snow/sleet year! Watching the video, I remembered I was running behind a girl around the canal bridge near CR...I thought "what are those pretty crystals in her hair? Is that a special princess ponytail holder?"....It was ICE!! In her hair! I guess her sweat was freezing!

Not that I would encourage anyone to be as AR as I can be about visualization, but you can also go to Google maps and walk through 70% of the course at ground level to see what it looks like. Of course most of it will be dark when we run, but it is still fun to visualize the ramps and bridges.

Also, how cools is it that the MapMyRun map actually shows the grandstand for the race finish? If you look at some of the angles on the Bing maps, they took the pictures during one of the marathons. You can clearly see the cones and where the runners are. But, it only shows up using the bird's eye view and from one direction.

Thanks again Coach. You are treasure to all of us on this WISH board.

I find it ironic that both Google and Bing's Bird's Eye flew the area close to the same days. Back in 2004 or 5 there was a fly over during the race prep, also
