I've been reading the many tips and suggestions and am very grateful to everyone who posted in so many threads. I have a questions about hats. I have a large head and have trouble finding hats that are not too tight. I have a visor but I am concerned that my scalp will get sunburnt. What do you wear?
:earsboy: :earsgirl:

I personally use a visor b/c I look horrible in a hat!! :earsgirl: However, I have been known to get my "part" sunburned, so I usually put a bit of sunscreen right along the part. However, the rest of my family (male & female) wear hats. Of course the guys dont' care how they look & my duaghter looks cute in one, so she wears one for protection & fashion! Ha! The florida sun is BRUTAL, so if there is any chance that you could get burned, I would wear the hat. Have fun! :Pinkbounc

I really prefer visors over hats. They are much easier to make on and off on rides plus if you have belt loops you can attach it to them on rides or whatever so you don't accidently forget it somewhere!

Well, the visor keeps the sun out of your face and the cap will keep the top of your head cool. Which is more important to you?

My husband has a big head too and he gets his caps from a store called "Lids" in the mall. The caps in there are $14.99 and up. They only sell caps so most likely they cater to your size. Just a thought.

Hannah and I will be wearing matching visors b/c I don't do hats, but DS and DH will be probably wear matching hats!

I spent a good part of the weekend mall surfing looking for a hat that fit my head and I have had no luck, ditto for a visor. A dollar store was selling those umbrella sunhats and wouldn't you know, I found one that fit. DH purchased 2 (a matching pair). Here's my concern, I'm afraid that I might take someones eye out with those things. Anyone have any experience with these "umbrella" sunhats? They open like a tiny umbrella and have a band that fits onto your head.

:umbrella:

I too have a problem finding hats that fit - I've actually never found a woman's hat that fits - they are just all too small. But, I've also burnt my head and scalp on my first trip to Disney, so I started looking around for a hat that would fit.

The trick is to buy a hat that is sized - the generic baseball caps tend to be much too small.

Here are two websites that have GREAT hats - I have one from each of these, though my husband has stolen one of them from me - they are not cheap, but I've had one hat for 15 years, and another one for 10 years - so they really last a long time, and stay great looking (you can wash them, then block them to dry, and they look terrific):

Ultimate Hats

Tilley Hats

Both websites should have instructions on how to measure yourself to get the right sized hat - I would be very surprised if you couldn't find something that fit you.

One suggestion I'd make is if you're in Disney during the really hot months, to go with one of the tropical weight hats - the hat my husband uses is a standard weight, and I thought it was too hot to wear at Disney in August and September - but it suits him just fine! Everyone has their own tastes! I also like the ones that have a darker underbrim; helps deflect the glare from all the cement at Disney, but again, it's personal choice.

Good luck!!

On our last trip I said I didn't need one-2nd day I bought a visor-couldn't take the sun. :flower:

For those of you that prefer a visor but can't easily put sunscreen on/in/thru your hair with ease(like myself), I saw that Coppertone Sport now comes in a spray/aerosol dispenser. Might help preventing burning through your hair. I use this sunscreen for softball, and golf all summer and it doesn't run into my eyes when I sweat or leave your hands greasy. I haven't tried the spray yet because I still have lots of the bottle left but if you try it let me know how it works.

HAT! preferably one with a brim all the way around. Visors don't protect against sunburn.

I like visors. You the the right hair for a hat. Long enough for a pony tail to fit through the hole in the back. I have short hair and a hat looks terrible on me. :earsgirl:

On our recent trip to Disneyland my mom bought a bucket style hat with Winnie The Pooh on it, and I bought a Princess Visor. I stayed sunburn free, she got burned especially her nose. I love visors, because hats get too sweaty for me.

As for finding hats and visors that fit, get a plain color in the mens department at Wal Mart, if you don't want plain, sew your own patch on.

I usually wear a DVC baseball hat when Im outdoors

I did recently buy a lime green sunhat w/about a 3" brim that I'll be wearing in Aug
DS13 has a smaller rimmed bucket style hat

I actually don't wear either one but I did purchase a visor during my last trip. I don't like hats as they make my head itch for some reason and It feels like they make my head hotter. I plan on trying to wear my visor during my next trip to keep the sun out of my eyes.

I've always try to wear a hat or I end up with a sunburned scalp which can really hurt. On our trip to DL in December. I was wearing a hat and took it off on TOT but didn't secure it. Needless to say as we joke now, the TOT vortex sucked up Mom's hat. They checked our seating area and I came back the next day to lost and found but it never showed up. So then my DH proceeds to tell me how that was the ugliest hat, he hated it, and it "didn't do a thing for me" and we have this big to do over it. So the next day while DH and DS are on Star Tours. I was at Star Traders looking to buy a new "un-ugly" hat. I'm not sure how it happened but for some reason I started talking to the nicest CM in the hat section about the differences sizes and types of mouse ears. Before I knew it, I had a brand new set of ears, which she had me personalize to make sure "I" would use them.

I got the regular youth ones as per her suggestion so I could use the elastic strap on the rides when needed, and they worked great for saving my scalp from sunburn. I had the absolute best time wearing them and took them back when we went in March. My DH's reaction was priceless, after all I wasn't it nice I wasn't embarrasing him with an ugly hat! I can't tell you how many extra smiles and giggle we got from folks especially when the kid's had their's on too. The ears didn't seem hot and bothersome and I actually sometimes forgot I even had them on until I got a Disney smile and they were great for pictures. I keep teasing my husband he needs a pair too, and how I want to get a gold pair.

I would recommend a hat. We were there last week and it was a scorcher. I have a beige baseball cap with a navy blue underbrim, and I couldn't believe how much more comfortable I was with it on rather than off. It kept me cool because I didn't have the sun beating down on my head, since I have darker colored hair. My hair is just above my shoulders so I pulled it into a little ponytail and pulled it through the adjustable band in the back and it worked great. I didn't lose it on any rides. I've never been a hat wearer before but I'm so glad I had this one with me. I even bought a Mickey one to take home. Now if I could just get DS2 to wear one! He pulls them right off.

I usually tuck a bucket hat in my pack to keep the sun off my face and head. Scalp sunburns- ouch! My mom also has a larger-sized head. On a Disney trip we took together, I bought her a Mickey Mouse logo raffia hat at Le Chapeau. It looked a lot like this one. It seemed to stretch more than other hats.
