Visiting the Grand Canyon

Only if you had planned on visiting the north rim.
According to the National Park Service, only 10% of visitors go to the North Rim (when it's open.) The North Rim is more scenic (or it was before the pine trees and the lodge burned) but the South Rim is more accessible with a lot more lodging and restaurants in Flagstaff which is 80 miles away. Also, Sedona is less than an hour south of Flagstaff.

Planning to visit the South Rim? It will be DAYTIME ONLY starting December 6 until further notice. All overnight stays are now REQUIRED to be cancelled from that date on. This is due to little to no water in the South Rim.

This makes me so sad. I understand why it's being done but one of my fondest memories was Christmas at the Grand Canyon. We spent the night at the Kachina Lodge in a South Rim view room, we watched the sun set before having Christmas dinner at the El Tovar Dining Room (only time I've ever dressed that formally in a national park), and had day after Christmas breakfast there as well with tableside hot cocoa and other goodies.

So sad that some Christmases got cancelled.

Some friends and I once did the Bracebridge Dinner at Yosemite. It was funny to see the lobby of the Ahwahnee set up with coat racks and banks of little cubicles for shoes so that people could take off their parks and hiking/snow boots and put on their dress shoes for the evening. Also amusing to ride the Yosemite Valley shuttle bus as it picked up people from campgrounds who were dressed to the nines instead of in jeans and t-shirts!

Have 't seen the dinner, but have been there afterwards when the decorations were still up.
