Visiting New York advice

Also check the chain hotel websites. Most offer discounts (AAA, AARP, military, government employee- which if you work for a public university or even a school you are eligible for), and some have discounts for their frequent travel club members. Just sign up for the rewards club and then search online for "discounts for whatever chain" for codes. (Hilton Honors has great discounts). We stayed at the Wydham New Yorker in a metro queen (1 queen bed, HUGE floor space, fridge/coffee maker, big bathroom) for less than $200 a night, taxes included, in June 2015. It is a great location, right across from Penn Station so it made taking Amtrak very easy- just a walk across the street- and we had a great view of the Empire State Building from our window. This is maybe a 10-15 minute walk into Times Square, and felt very safe walking back after an evening show (using city street smarts, of course!). We've also stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square on W. 41st street for $235 a night, taxes included, in NOv. 2015. This is a GREAT price for the location, and included breakfast. We didn't have a vehicle either time, but when we stayed at the DoubleTree Suites right IN Times Square, the parking was $40 a day and definitely worth it; there were 5 of us and driving/paying to park was the cheapest form of transportation!

One of our favorite things to do on our first night in NYC, if the weather is nice, is to take an open-air EVENING bus tour (Grey Lines, I think). You load in Times Square and drive around the city as night falls and the city lights up. This tour goes over the bridge into Brooklyn, so you get a great view of NYC after dark. This is usually a pretty informative tour; we try to take it on the first night in case there's anything we didn't know about that we decide to add to our schedule. Other than this, I would skip the hop-on-hop-off buses in NYC. You spend more of your time sitting in traffic than anywhere else, and in the summer if you sit on the top it's HOT and all you smell is traffic fumes.

I'd look at a map and group my touring accordingly. For example... from Times Square, walk up the west side of Central Park to the Museum of Natural History. You can wander through the park a bit on the way, see Strawberry Fields (memorial to John Lennon, by Yoko Ono) and see the Dakota (where he was killed, and I believe she still lives there). You can also walk through Lincoln Center if you are interested in seeing this along the way. We didn't care for the Musuem of Natural History, which was surprising as DH and I are both scientists. We did, however, LOVE the Metropolitan Museum of Art- MUCH more than just artwork! If you are on the west side of the island at the Natural History Museum, I'd take the cross-town bus across the park to the Met. I'd plan 3 or 4 hours at either museum, and that doesn't include transport time.

If you are interested in Rockefeller Center, make that a destination. You could go early and hang out with the Today Show crowd if you hope to get on TV (not our thing). Options in that area are the NBC Studio Tour, which we enjoyed, Radio City Music Hall tour (loved this, but DD's done training programs with the Rockettes for 2 summers so it's kind-of "our thing!"), Top of the Rock (want to do this... get your timed ticket early in the day, when you can choose your tour time... and I'd go during either during the day, for the view, or late at night, for the city lights). There isn't a lot to see at Rockefeller Plaza, but you are within walking distance of St. Patrick's Cathedral and 5th Avenue if you want to window-shop at or go into the high end stores. The Museum of Modern Art is also in this neighborhood, and is SO worth it! I'd plan 2 hours each for RCMH, TotR, and NBC, longer at MOMA, maybe 30 mins at the cathedral.

Head Downtown for Empire State Building, 9-11 Musuem/tribute, and the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island. You'll need tickets for all of these, and I believe both 9-11 and SoL are timed. If you are doing Top of the Rock, skip ESB- same city, same view, although for movie buffs ESB can be mecca! I haven't been to the 9-11 exhibits so don't have any advice. SoL/EI... you need to know that there is only ONE ferry service that can actually STOP at either of these Islands. I believe it's statuecruises.com Anything else that advertises SOL is just a float-by, not an opportunity to get off the boat and onto the islands. We love the SoL and EI. I don't go into the crown anymore, but DH and DD22 have done this. You should be advised that to get to the crown, you go up and down a very, very narrow, tight, spiral staircase; DH was unable to stand up straight, and you cannot put your foot fully down on the steps. I enjoy going into the pedestal- there's a museum there about the Statue's history, construction, etc. and there's an outdoor walkway at the top of the pedestal/base of the Statue itself. DH and DD both say they wouldn't go to the crown again- it's a strenuous hike and the view isn't all that great as the windows/viewing area are quite small. We all love Ellis Island, and can spend about 3 hours there, walking through the exhibits and doing the audio tour. Security will be high at Battery Park, where you get the ferry, and even higher over on the Island if you are going into the Statue herself.

Theater tickets- get the tickets for Wicked (and Hamilton, if you are interested) before you ever leave home. Except for that small, chancy lottery, you won't get a discounted Wicked ticket. Try to purchase directly from the theater, NOT one of the resale sites. You just don't know if you'll get real tickets or not- or if they are resold (i.e., grossly overpriced). We usually get our theater tickets either rush (be at the box office at 9am with cash and appropriate ID- check theater websites for their rush/lottery programs) or through TKTS in Times Square. Decent prices, decent seats. Check TKTS.com to see what's been available for shows and the approximate discount. We've also had good luck through broadwaybox.com

Food- We like Becco (between 8th and 9th Aves, I think). Becco has great prices for Manhattan, we think, even the wine and the food is terrific. We've had great pizza at JOhn's, I think, across from the DoubleTree Suites in Times Square, and there's a place next to it that lets you pick your protein, starch, sauce, and veggies and they stir fry it for you. There are LOTS of cafe-like places in the Times Square area (even if they are local chains, like Cafe Europa) and the Halal guys (food trucks) in the area are inspected by the city and have good food. I would definitely NOT go to places like Steak&Shake, Olive Garden, TGIFriday's, etc. Check trip advisor.com for food in the neighborhood where you are staying. If all else fails go to Whole Foods in Columbus Circle- the most amazing food bar/buffets anywhere!

Absolutely loved this post!!!! Thank you a million. Most helpful. So if I understand you correctly here is what makes sense to group in one day - top of the rock and modern art museum. I am going to skip statue and skip empire but would so love to see ellis island. But if I read your post correctly this doesn't make logistical sense putting ellis island in the mix on rock and museum day.

I also appreciate the open air evening ride tip. Great idea for arrival day.

So will plan open air ride and if you had to pick a favorite day which would it be

1. Rock plus art museum plus window shopping or cute boutique shopping
2. Ferry ride with Ellis island stop

And a million Thx on the stairway tip to the crown. No I don't want to do that at all

I found tix for les mis on dh hospital website. 3 of us orchestra center for 411. Honestly that is more than I thought since play pretty old but Broadway box was close to 600 so I assume 411 decent deal for three of us.

Go online and check TKTS. See if Les Mis tickets were available today. Usually they have them for about 30% off, or better. IME, most "Broadway" theaters are pretty small, so even if you are in the balcony, the view is pretty good. I think that's kind-of pricy for Les Mis. We saw "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" last June, right after it won all the awards. I bought the tickets at the box office on the morning of the show, paid $89 for front mezzanine tickets- and that was a pretty hot show at that point! (I just checked... Les Mis had tix at TKTS for both the matinee and evening show today)

Even though we are not shoppers, I'd go with option #1 for your tourist day. You'll experience more of Manhattan this way- and honestly you can go to Central Park, too- it's that close to Rockefeller Center.

I just checked for you and Les Miz was at the TKTS booth today. I don't know the percentage off, but it's usually 40-50%. I would bet it will be the booth since the show has been running for awhile. 411 is a lot for this show. Also check show website to see if there are non-student rush tickets available.

Thanks maybe I am doing something wrong but when I look at tkts site it looks like a membership site. I clicked on it directly from pp post- if I am doing something wrong can u clarify exact site? Thanks!!

Go to tdf.org and then click on the "learn more" toggle that says "TKTS Discount Booths." It'll take you to the page with info about the booths. From here you can click on "browse real time listings" to let you know what shows offered discounted tickets today. Unfortunately they don't show the discount/price, but it's usually in the range of 30%-50% off. Les Mis has been playing for a LONG time, so I'd expect it would be closer to the 50% off. Also, go to the website of the theater where Les Mis is playing to learn about their rush ticket policies/availability.

TDF is the Theater Development Fund, which you can join, but don't have to- but they are the folks who run the TKTS booth, so that's why you get directed to their webpage first.

Can anyone tell me about visiting New York. I would like to do a mom amd daughter trip. We would love to go with a tour group.
As pp have said, plan your own trip, much cheaper than a tour.
Also Uber has a huge presence in NYC and is much cheaper than taxis...
I was born in NY and now live outside the city and take the train in frequently. I'm not crazy about the subways, so we use buses and Uber to get around.
If you want ideas of where to get show tickets for less, etc, pm me and I would be happy to help you navigate NY!
It's a great city!

Got it thanks! Now for the DUMB question and yes I have seen this play in NYC MANY years ago...but DD very interested so back I go. I understand this TKTS booth is in time square so the DAY OF that I want to see the show I simply show up at this ticket booth. Can I do so at 2 pm for an 8 pm show or is that too early/too late? I notice there is a window at this kiosk of sorts called PLAY EXPRESS. Would you consider this a play even though there is singing in it? Don't want to be in the wrong line! My only real option to see this play is the Wednesday 8 pm performance in July or the Sunday 3 pm performance.

Planning on ARRIVING into the city on Wednesday so do you recommend doing this ARRIVAL night? Or I could do Sunday at 3 but you've convinced me to see the Metropolitian Museum of Art which I am concerned about fitting that in, food AND Les Mis at 3 pm...

So ideally I would like to arrive in NYC in time to check into the hotel, get tickets, eat at the Italian place you recommended and see the 8 pm show on Thursday July 21st I think it is...Feasible? Do I make reservations for the Italian place, I didn't see a place where I could on line.

THanks!

THanks for such a great spin on it. Absolutely, I am not messing around with discounted tickets if there is a CHANCE it wouldn't happen for Wicked.not worth it! Due to various commitments/schedules we had planned on NYC in July -yes a million degrees I am sure. We are in WDW in June so we are familiar with HEAT!!!! Is there any book/website you can recommend for top ten don't miss experiences etc. in NYC. Here is What I wanted to see:

1. 9/11. But again what I love about ABD is no line, no waiting...ABD does this on their tour but I could certainly do it myself
2. Ellis/Statue of Liberty
3. Broadway Shows - Wicked and ??? . Another one for sure just not sure WHAT one. 17 year old girl reccommendations?
4. The Tenement Museum that ABD visits sounds really interesting to me. Where you see a play and visit various apartment styles of what life would have been like back then. That really stuck with me as something I wanted to see.
5. DD loves Natural History Museums...I will assume NYC has one :).
6. I do enjoy a little shopping at very specific stores - so need to allow a little time for that but not TOO MUCH no one else in my family shares this interest!!

Would there be anything else you would MUST SEE/MUST DO based on the above list? THANK YOU!
Museum of Natural History has the largest dinosaur skeleton ever found! And the museum (like the Met museum) is pay what you can afford. DH and I pay $1 to get into each...

There's a TKTS app for your smart phone. That's what I checked. It will tell you what's at the booth that day.

And just so I am not confusing museums...there is the Modern Art Museum and the Metropolitian Art Museum. I assume the MET one is what is most popular?

The TKTS booth is open 3-8pm for evening performances. Get there right at 3pm. It's a musical, so don't get in the play express line!

I think seeing it on arrival night would be great. You need lots of time for the Met, so Sunday is a good option for that. It will be very crowded on Sunday though.

For Les Miz -- if it's the only day you can see it and the only show you want to see, keep checking for discounts. Broadwaybox.com or maybe playbill. I'd hate for you to miss it in case the TKTS booth doesn't offer it that day. However, it's usually up there most days. Also, if you work for a hospital or not for profit or in a union, you may be able to join TDF. It's a low yearly fee and you can buy discounted Bway tickets ahead of time. The top ticket prices are about $45-47 and you can print your tickets at home. Feel free to PM me if you want more info! Hope this helps!

Yep, there's MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), the Met (every kind of art and huge) and even The Cloisters (Medieval Art). The Met is a must do in my opinion. Nothing like it, except maybe the Louvre in Paris. It's huge, so pick what you want to see ahead of time - ex. Impressionists, Greek art and Egyptian. Don't try to do it all in one day!

Thanks!!!! Your comment about it being busy on Sunday has me worried though. Like if I ROPE DROP at 10 AM am I ok or still expect it to be packed?

Yes, it's a good idea to get there at opening. It gets more crowded in the afternoon. Eat lunch early, like Disney! The Cafeteria is very expensive though. We tend to go out to the food carts outside for a bite to eat.

You should definitely try to fir in a stroll through Central Park after The Met. There are entrances on either end of The Met and you are a short walk to Belvedere's Castle, Great Lawn, Cleopatra's Needle as well as other sights and people watching. Also, The Boathouse Cafe (on the expensive side) is great restaurant with a beautiful view of the lake.

My daughter and I just stayed in NJ, near the airport, and used the train in to the city. Very easy and very nice affordable hotels.

I was in line at the TKTS booth at 6:30 on Saturday night and they still had 50% off tickets for Les Mis.

For most shows 50% off is about $70 to $80 for orchestra seats. I always take best available so don't know if other cheaper options are available.

There are two separate lines at the TKTS Booth in Times Squares, musicals and plays. As you face the ticket booths, the play line is the one on the right. Les Miz is a musical; do not wait in the play line for tickets to this. The plays line is always a lot shorter. You should be waiting in line before the TKTS Booth opens for the best selection.
