Ok first let me vent.....
I downloaded the free virus scanner from grisoft.com (AVG) and my computer was acting odd a couple months later. I disabled the AVG and ran the pcpitstop.com virus scan. It came up with 17 infected files. So I decide to stop using a free scanner - assuming it was worth as much as I didn't pay for it - so paid and downloaded McAffee Online. Ever since I downloaded it, my computer has been acting 'sticky' and slow. Tonight I disabled it and ran the pcpitstop.com virus scanner again - and I have over 100 infected files!!! Wel what the heck am I paying McAffee for??? Since it doesn't pick up the infections in a normal virus scan - it can't clean them either!!!! So now i have this virus filled computer and don't know what to do!! I emailed McAffee Support..but I bet they dont get back to me for another 48 hrs!!!

HELP!!!!! Anyone else had this trouble??? Should I get Norton? I don't even want to trust this scanners anymore!

We have been VERY happy with our Norton Anti-Virus. It has caught a number of viruses in our e-mail.

I have used Norton for years and it nails several virus emails every week.

I also use Norton on my personal laptop. At work we use macafee, but we have to update the version via cd, it is a pain. I was impressed enough with Norton to but it after the free trail with new laptop was done.

It's only 19.95 a year I think.

How frustrating for you. I don't know how to get rid of those viruses. Did you ask on the technical support board?

If this tells you anything, the military uses Norton, so that is what we use at home too.

McAfee actually gets a lot of their stuff directly from Norton.

Norton is good but their customer support is horrible.

I've heard from a few people that PCcillin is the way to go.

We also have Norton, and a Firewall. I wouldn't have a computer without a Firewall.

Even though we do have Norton, several weird looking e-mails have gotten through...usually a jumbled user name, and a weird subject title...also a large file (usually over 100KB). I immediately delete it without opening it.

I just got disney on msn and it comes with McAfee online virus protection included. I have noticed that since I've been on it, the computer has gotten sooooo slow and it either freezes or kicks you off line. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?! Even though I hate the thought of finding a new ISP, I can not stand how slow this is!

MacAfee stinks. I got it with my PC last year but switched over to Norton within a month cause MacAfee was so bad.

I've been using McAfee for years without any problem (although I do notice that it tends to slow down my computer). McAfee is our corporate mandated virus scan program although our division uses one called "Sophos". Our IT department likes Sophos because they can remotely manage all of our computers.

How about a poll? I think I'll post one right now. :)

Colleen,

Is Verizon available in your area of PA? I have had their dial up and for 5 years and my DD uses their DSL and we have never had any problems. That way you can choose whatever virus protection that you want.
I did not know that msn was an internet service provider.

I've used McAfee for years as well and haven't had any problems. I've back checked it with other scanners and I've never found a virus that wasn't caught.

So sorry that you've had this trouble. I don't know much about the other scanners since I mainly use McAfee. I do know that the version of McAfee that I use is not compatable with Internet Explorer 6.0. There are probably issues with just about any program according to the other software that is loaded and the configuration settings used.

I've also had some speed slowdown with McAfee although it hasn't been a big enough issue with mine to get me to change. In my case, it has to do with the setting that I use in McAfee. I have it scanning everything all the time. Every email (of course), every internet page I hit (including all those #%^&@ pop-ups) and does a background scan of files every time the system is idle for even a minute or less.
