Hi guys,

Just upped our seats to premium economy for the summer hols. My DH doesn't know. It's a surprise. I got a pay rise at work which was backdated to September which will just about cover it so he'll never know (well not til we get there!!)

Can you give me the low down on what to expect?

Oh and when orgabniseing our seating, what's the layout and which seats should I ask for? We're flying from Gatwick in July.

Cheryl,
Where are you flying to as they use different aircraft and configurations for different destinations??
Anyway you should get access to the Club House at Gatwick, with complimentary snacks and drinks, after your exclusive check-in desk. Also you get to board the plane at the same time or just after first class and also at the other end get baggage off first on seperate carousel with first class, well you do at Orlando.
Also prior to take off you get orange juice or champagne and then the meal is served pretty soon afterwards. On our last flight we had finished our meal before friends in economy had been served their main course!!!
Don't think I have forgotten anything important!!!
Enjoy your holiday and flight.
Claire :D

Well done - you will definitely enjoy PE and what a lovely surprise for your DH:D

We had our first taste of PE last October and thoroughly enjoyed it. We (family of 3, me DH and DD then 9) sat in row 72 which has no-one sat at the back which suited me down to the ground so no horrible little children kicking the back of my seat like I normally get, or banging their tray:mad: :( . Unless you are using Twilight Checkin (no PE or Upper Class desk on Twilight), you have your own PE check-in line which is great if the economy queue is rather large;) . You can board pretty much as soon or as late as you like - we went for middle boarding so we could get comfortable and enjoy our glasses of champagne/bucks fizz.

As for the cabin itself, it's up the spiral staircase which gives you a real buzz when you get on - the seats are in rows of 2, so Katie and I had 2 seats together then Darryl sat on the other side of the aisle to us - a much wider aisle than in economy, I hasten to add (on the return flight from Miami we changed Darryl's seat to one near the exit door for extra leg room which he thoroughly enjoyed - he's not overly tall, but the only problem with the seats I mentioned above is that the cabin crew's chairs are behind them so you can't put them back as far as normal - as someone who can never sleep on a plane this is not a problem as I sit and watch movies anyway and DD can sleep on a sixpence!). The chairs are wider and much more comfy - and I've got a big bum so these things are important;) . The chair in front is further away - even when chairs are reclined you have better space. What I really liked is not only do you have overhead lockers, but by each window seat is another very spacious locker which was great for newspapers/mags and handluggage, water bottles etc. Because there's not many passangers in this cabin (I think about 40?), the cabin crew seem much more attentive - like Clare says dinner is served pretty promptly which means you should get your choice of meal and they regularly brought around glasses of water/juice throughout the flight. The chairs even have a little stool at the bottom which you can slide down and for people like me who are somewhat vertically challenged this was a real plus.

When we landed both times, on decending the stairs the cabin crew were literally holding back the economy passengers so we could get off first. We got through Orlando airport and out in our car in record time, mostly helped by the fact that because you are off first with Upper Class and your luggage is on a separate carousel, you're head of the queue each time through immigration, buggage reclaim, car rental etc.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience which we're hoping to repeat later this year. It'll be sooo difficult travelling economy again, but my next ambition is First Class:D :D :D

I'm sure I've probably forgotten something, but know there's loads of PE travellers out there who will add their experiences.

Enjoy:cool:

Here's a picture of the Premium Economy cabin on the Gatwick/Orlando route taken in October. The picture is taken looking towards the back of the cabin from the doorway. There are 12 more seats (i.e. 3 more sets of 2 either side of the gangway) looking forwards from the doorway. You can't pre-book the exit seats, but you can get them if you arrive early. They are 75 A&C and the same row on the other side of the gangway, which I'm pretty sure are H&K.

Here's a picture of us in the Virgin Clubhouse lounge. Virgin are currently offering its use (at check-in) to Economy and Premium Economy passengers for £25 per head. Historically it has been available only to Upper Class passengers, although I think some people who have booked PE through Virgin Holidays, rather than directly with Virgin Atlantic have been allowed free access.

Thanks for the info and pictures, I too have upgraded to PE for our trip in April '03 - Really looking forward to it and should be a good start to the hols !:smooth:

Cheryl & the LostBoy

There is a downside to PE!........You won't want to travel in economy ever again;)

We went PE in 2000 to Orlando and again in 2001.I honestly wouldn't want to go if I couldn't fly PE,it makes that much difference. The flight isn't something you have to get through to get to Orlando, the flight is a brilliant and enjoyable start to the holiday.

Rob,

If you book flight only as I have the price is lower still.I booked the flights in 2001 and 2002 with Virgin holidays and had 10% FVC discount off.For this october I booked flight only with BonVoyage and EACH PE ticket was £ 400 lower than 2001 and £300 lower than the 2002 price:)

Ummm... £380 is more than the cost of a Premium Annual Pass to WDW.

I agree that travelling in PE is nice (although you should try Upper Class for a brilliant way to fly), but for me I would rather slum it in Economy and upgrade my Disney ticket to AP.

Regards

Rob

Thanks,I hadn't seen that they had seat configurations on the site:)

:Pinkbounc I,m another one who flew PE for the first time in november, I loved it much better than economy, I said I wouldn,t fly economy again but when I went to Boston I flew economy, but we pre booked last two rows of two at the back of the plane so it wasn,t too bad. Plus the plane both ways was barely full, so we ended up with double seats each ( four ). :bounce:

I booked PE seats this morning. I am now holding the members of this list responsible for my next credit card bill :p

BTW is there seperate book in facilities for the return from Orlando. LAst year the line was very long

Kylie,

You know it makes sense;)

Yes there is a seperate desk and check-in facilities in Orlando on the return:p It is just as brillaint and just as quick:Pinkbounc :bounce:
