A number of questions on how this works
Can you only check in online, less than 24 hours before you fly or can you do this anytime the day before you fly?
Also the return journey home..........do you need to check in online BEFORE leaving your luggage at Downtown Disney or can you check in at DD also.
I have also noticed on Virgin website of the different seating layouts ?

You can only check in less than 24 hours before your flight.

You can check in online before you go to DTD and just drop your bags there or you can actually check in at DTD and drop your bags.

You can check in online between 24 and 2 hours before your flights official departure time and print off your boarding cards.

You can just go to DTD and check in there without cheking in online.

The seating plan you want is (normally, about 90% of the time) 747-400 seating configuration 3 (sometimes 2) when you go to update your booking you can see your seat configuration by clicking on your flight (fill in booking reference, the flight number going out and the date plus the lead name) then click on make changes to your booking and then view or change your seat.

You can just go to DTD and check in there without cheking in online.

You can do this but its just like checking in at airport your seats are not guarenteed, You need to do it online if you want specific seats.
Last year we checked in at DTD and although we were sat together we could not have the seats we had reserved.

This Easter we did online checkin then to airport bag drop, took 5 mins at airport, regular line was about 1 hour.

I guess we were quite lucky, we didn't do online booking on the return flight from Orlando we just went to DTD and checked in there, there was only 1 other family checking in!, and we got the seats that we had actually requested on the website for the last 8mths!.

If you haven't decided to check-in your baggage at Downtown Disney, you just head on over to the bag drop areas in the airport terminal and deposit your luggage. You'll need to be there 2+ hours before departure.

Another question: when you check-in on-line for the return flight what do you do about getting prints of your boarding cards? (I'm taking my Archos 704 but I don't intend lugging a printer around with me.)

You don't need to print anything out. You just take your e-tickets (or paper tickets) along with your passport to the bag drop counter, and they will issue your boarding cards there. No printer needed!
