Can anyone put my mind at rest - if we add car hire to our holiday with Virgin Holidays we dont have to produce a credit card at Orlando airport on our arrival or pay a cash deposit for the car?

that depends on which insurance you have.
If you have their platinum insurance, you get a free tank of fuel and no deposit.
their premium or 2nd expensive one, you have to leave a $100 deposit.
for their cheapest insurance you have to leave a I think $500 deposit.

for both deposits it MUST be a credit card, they DO NOT accept cash.

:confused3 I looked at getting the Platinum package - but I cant see anything that says you have to leave these deposits you mention on Virgin's website

We have used Virgin and Dollar 3 times now. We have never had to leave a deposit using their normal insurance. You do have to give them a credit card number, this allows them to make charges to your card for any extra charges you may incur or if you are fined for speeding.

Last year we found we needed the card for a day longer and we just rang them up and they just charged our credit card with the extra dayś fees.

But it seems that with the Platinum package you do not even leave a credit card imprint. I dont have a credit card only debit card

I don't really think the platinum insurance will be any different to the normal one other than you have an extra driver, kid's seats and a tank of petrol or something like that.

The issue for Dollar is being able to retrieve any extra charges you may incur easily which is why they take your credit card. As I said before in our experience with Virgin and Dollar they just take your credit card number ready for any charges which usually there are none. Charges for speeding or toll avoidance charges are usually made after you return home thereby when they have your credit card they can charge to the card.

If possible I would get a credit card (Nationwide or Abbey Zero) so you are covered.

We've had Platinum Insurance when we've booked with Virgin and other companies when hiring a car with Dollar mainly so that we don't have to mess around with petrol and we've never had to leave a CC imprint!

but it is different! as others have said, you dont need to leave a card imprint with platinum but you do with the others.

I suspect there may be some things you can get away without them chasing you up afterwards (toll violations?) if you pay by platinum? where as any other level where they have your card imprint they will always chase you up over every little charge.

are you sure they arent putting a hold on the deposit amount? - I think when companies put a hold on an amount if it isnt ever debited then it wont show on your statements.

I bet that is what they're doing.

Yes I am sure. However, it sounds now like people who do not have credit cards are now being penalised by being forced to take the higher insurance and pay out more per day. I would rather pay less as we don't need the other extras offered by the top package and let them have my credit card number.:)
