ECONOMY BAGGAGE ALLOWANCES BY PIECE

new_econpiecebaggage136x205_tcm4-352214.gif

Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 23kg (50lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in).

The above is stated on the website but i am still a little confused and worried i might have to buy smaller and more suitcases for our family.

If i had a suitcase and it weighed 28kg and that was the only bag i had would it be allowed or would i have to have 2 bags with upto 23 in one and 5 kg in another?

Donna

Is 23kg alot? I have 2 kids and i don't really want to take too many bags.

It is quite alot, we take big suitcases and Im always convinced that they will be way over 23kg but they are usually only about 17 or 18. You would be better taking 2 medium instead of 1 large if you can tho to be on the safe side. :goodvibes

Agree there. 23 kgs is pretty heavy, they usually slap a heavy sticker on anything over 20 in my experience.
We've just booked Virgin flights, this afternoon, for August 2007, so am partly relieved to hear that they still allow 23kgs per bag (wheras it use to be 32kgs), as last time we flew Globespan (very expensive this year) and were able to pay extra in advance for extra luggage on the way back. I'd heard that airlines had reduced their allowances generally, and was a little worried it may have been even lower than it's turned out to be!!! 23kgs x2 each should be plenty, even for my dw!!!!!!!!

Work it out for each passenger and it is a massive 46kg. We will do the same as last year, pack one or two cases inside our larger ones on the way out to allow for bargains on the way back. We intend packing enough clothes for about 4/5 days then use the on-site washing machines. We are also taking our own washing powder tablets.

Just bear in mind that if your luggage is 18-20 kg going it will be CONSIDERAbLY heavier when you've bought up the whole of World of Disney and Once upon a Toy! (And take a tip from me, DON'T but Cluedo or Monoply in a tin!)

Virgin Atlantic permits each passenger a free baggage allowance. Depending on your final destination, an excess baggage fee will apply for any additional baggage you wish to check in over your free allowance.

For passengers exceeding their baggage allowance, please allow extra time at he airport to pay the excess. Our check in facilities will close 60 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time of the flight. Passengers who fail to complete check in procedures by this time will not be able to travel.

Virgin Atlantic operates two types of baggage allowance. Flights to/from the USA, Caribbean, Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and Nigeria are based on the number of pieces carried. Flights to/from South Africa, India, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai and Australia are based on the weight of baggage being checked in.

In accordance with the Heath and Safety Executive, passengers will only be able to check in excess baggage weighing 32kg (70lbs) or less per piece. The new safety measure, which will apply to all airlines and destinations from the UK, is being introduced to reduce strains and injuries amongst baggage handling staff. Passengers who exceed the weight limit will be asked to repack their excess baggage into smaller units and pay the appropriate charges* before they can check in.

Between Orlando/Miami and UK
Departing UK - GBP70 per piece.
Departing USA - USD115 per piece.

Oops, yes, ahem... it was brief!!!:)
I was so excited to book, confused my years then!!!!
Just got our confirmation, tried to book seats, but my ref numbers dont work. We booked with dialaflight, so I'm presuming our ref is their number, not one Virgin recognises. Will have to ring dialaflight to ask them. Also, strangely, dd has her own booking ref, I think the agent must have made an error, and dd was cancelled amd then rebooked, hence the separate booking ref, weird!
Thanks for the info Obi Wan. 23 kgs/piece should be fine, may need to 'balance' the luggage a little more though!
