He swallowed a chicken bone!

What a day! We just brought our 17 week old puppy back from being neutered today. He was sound asleep on the floor next to me, so I didn't pay close enough attention. Apparently, he woke up, went into the garbage and found himself a chicken bone.

My DH and I heard him crunching and ran over to see the end of a cooked chicken drummie sticking out of his mouth. He freaked and went ballistic when we tried to take it from him (behavior I never want to see again!) In the process, he swallowed the bone whole- though we think it must have had one splintered end because he had crunched it.

What do we do????

Please help!

Not a vet... just a mom but don't totally panic.
My 11 pound Pom got one down once before we knew it and was absolutely fine.
It was a heartstopping feeling watching him lick his lips and knowing what he ate but it turned out okay. Just the same I'll say a prayer for your puppy.

What kind of dog is it? My dogs on occasion have enjoyed a confiscated chicken bone and have been ok. In fact, it happened the other night and boy, did she chew it fast, LOL. Yes, there is a danger it could rip the insides or lodge somewhere along the digestive track, but more than likely that won't happen - dogs eat all kind of things when you really think about it. If it makes you feel better you could either give your regular vet a call/leave a message, or if they're closed, call an emergency vet center - in many instances they will give you advice over the phone as to what to do. They will probably tell you to observe the dog and call back if he's showing any signs of distress. (They would not do surgery or anything to get a chicken bone out which more than likely will not cause any problems anyway; that would be reserved for major problems resulting from something like a blockage or tear only). Good luck. paw:

If it were me, I would probably call the vet. Most likely they will tell you that as long as your pup is acting fine, just keep an eye on him. My cats tend to get into things that they shouldn't. How they find these things I will never know. Occasionally the kids will let their Easter baskets sit around and a day or two later I will have a cat walking around with Easter grass sticking out of his rearend!!!!

CALL A VET OR EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL NOW!!!

I've always been told if this ever happens to give the dog bread. Don't know if this is really effective or not but it probably couldn't hurt. :confused3

Thanks for the advice. The vet is closed. They're open first thing in the morning and I'll call them as soon as they open. I think we'll keep an eye on him for tonight, but it's so hard to determine whether or not he's acting funny because he's still acting "drunk" from the anesthesia he had this morning. Poor little guy!

This "free" puppy has already cost us almost $1000 in vet bills in the past month.... I just got done saying, "What will be next???"

He's a black lab mix. He eats sticks, and grass, and paper, but he has never, EVER shown an interest in the garbage. Plus, it's usually in a closed closet, in a stainless steel can with a heavy lid. I had just pulled out the bag to put our dinner leftovers in it, and I then had pulled the trash bag into my laundry room to empty the lint tray from my dryer when the load finished before bringing the bag out. (I didn't even know he knew where that room is) He found it though!

Changed our mind after Zurg'sWife's stern message! DH is leaving a message on our vet's emergency phone number.....

We fed him some bread and butter.

They don't have an answering service???? Not to judge your vet or anything but what if the poor pup had complications from the surgery in the middle of the night? Are you just supposed to wait until the next morning to talk with the vet? Something terrible could happen by then that could be avoided by a simple call to the vet, even in the middle of the night! And yes, I have called my vet in the middle of the night. My old dog was lying unconcious and on death's door. The vet was at my house in less than 30 minutes and put him to sleep :sad2: .

I guess that just answered by question!!

I totally agree. Chicken bones are one of the worst things for dogs because they splinter and can cause internal damage. Call the vet . . . now! :thumbsup2

Our vet would recommend getting the dog to throw up immediately. Its better that it come up than to work its way threw a narrowing intestine. Give 1 ounce of hydrogen peroxide every five minutes until the dog throws up. It works. If you let the dog out, go with him so you can pick up the bones. Annie ate an entire rotisserie chicken a few years ago. Every ounce came up after two doses! Don't wait until morning no matter what!

Yup, Labs are known for eating all kinds of things. Poor little guy, I didn't realize it was the same dog that had the surgery today. That actually could be more of a problem since this dog may not have recovered full bowel function after his surgery today. What did they tell you about feeding him tonight? In people, it's nothing, then clear liquids for a while until bowels are up and running again. I would say you should give someone a call about it in light of this fact (I thought it was a second dog that ate the bone, sorry). In the meantime, check this out: http://www.dogsinthenews.com/issues/0101/articles/010125a.htm

In our household, after we have chicken we generally put the bones in a ziplock bag and freeze them if we can't get them outside to the trash right away.

We called the 2nd emergency number and our vet answered. It is his personal cell phone. He's very concerned.

We have to feed him bread, and give either mineral oil or cod liver or fish oil to grease things up.

We're supposed to call him back if he vomits or shows signs of constipation and he said he'd meet us at the office for an x-ray.

He also said we may not even see symptoms until Monday.

I'm such a bad puppy mommy!! :guilty:

Thanks for everyone's concern and advice!

You are absolutely NOT a bad puppy mommy!!

Puppies are notorious for getting into SOMETHING no matter what you do. A 10 pound dog can drag an entire cake off of a kitchen table in a matter of 15 seconds when you turn your back. Don't stress it, this happens, he'll be fine. A lot of dogs are able to pass chicken bones, it has the possibility of being dangerous but more than likely things will pass without a hitch. :)

I know you will have a long weekend. Good luck. Hopefully he chewed that bone up.

Whew! I'm glad the vet phoned you back. I was just going to post NOT to use the hydrogen peroxide. We do rec. that at work, but with your pup being so young and just having surgery, not a good idea.

We had an older gentleman come in with his pup on Wed. Thought it had swallowed a bolt. The man was putting training wheels on his grandsons bike and lost a bolt.
After a quick xray, no bolt inside, the man went home to see where the pup could have put it!!

Stuff happens...you are a GREAT mom cause you are right on top of it and called the vet.
