TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ A Tampa police officer was killed and another seriously wounded in an early Tuesday shooting during a traffic stop that has prompted a massive manhunt for two suspects.

Officer David Curtis pulled over a red Toyota Camry around 2:15 a.m. because it didn't have a visible tag. He called for back up after a background check revealed the male passenger in the car was wanted on a misdemeanor charge for writing a worthless check, Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.

Six minutes after the traffic stop, a witness called to say Curtis and Officer Jeffrey Kocab had been shot. Authorities arrived to find them lying on the ground. Kocab, 31, died. Curtis, also 31, was on life support Tuesday, police said.

Helicopters, police dogs and dozens of officers searched for the passenger, who is believed to be the shooter. A female who was driving the car was also being sought, McElroy said.

"We know they are armed and extremely dangerous," McElroy said. "We don't know what else they're capable of."

A few dozen officers in bulletproof vests combed the area for evidence, digging through trash cans and knocking on doors. Police from several surrounding cities responded.

The shooting happened on a main road near Interstate 4, which stretches from Tampa, through Orlando and into Daytona Beach.

Authorities had IDs on both suspects, but weren't sure if they were stolen.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and Mayor Pam Iorio announced Kocab's death at a news conference at the hospital where the officers were taken. Dozens of somber officers filled the hospital.

"Our hearts are just breaking. It is so very tragic," Iorio said.

Kocab was a 14-month veteran with the force. His wife is nine months pregnant, police said.

Curtis, a father of four boys, has nearly four years with the department, police said.

UPDATE
2 Tampa officers killed in Florida shooting By AP News
Tuesday, June 29, 2010

A second Tampa police officer has died following a shooting during a traffic stop.

Officials say 31-year-old officer David Curtis died at Tampa General Hospital. Officer Jeffrey Kocab, also 31, died earlier following the shooting early Tuesday.

A massive search is on for a man and woman who were driving a red Toyota Camry.

Police say Curtis pulled over the Camry because it didn't have a visible tag. He called for backup because the male suspect had a misdemeanor warrant.

A few minutes later, police received a 911 call that the officers had been shot. Authorities found the officers lying on the ground. The male suspect is believed to be the shooter.

Kocab's wife is nine-months pregnant. Curtis was a father of four.

sickening....having been a lifetime NY resident though I prefer the way FL handles putting out info...just announced the names of the people that are wanted in regards to the shooting. Last week when the Deputy Sheriffs were shot in my county (Polk and thankfully survived) the Sheriff was on the TV immediately with his "this crap won't be tolerated" attitude

Car was found and now CVS drugstores is paying to put up 10 electronic billboards with the mug shots of the wanted...this is the way things should be done..I have NO doubt they'll be caught

God Bless their families and also the family of all LEOs

So horrible and sad. Their poor wives and children. It just breaks your heart.

I hope they catch these *** soon before they kill anyone else.

What's really SICK is this guys RAP SHEET. On Bubba this morning they read everything and there is no way this guy should have been on the streets just SICK, and Bubba is right, the attorney is the one who's hands this is on.

Just hard to believe a total of 4 cops shot in the span of a week, in neighboring counties...Scary as all heck for this area..

I am sadened by this. I have MANY LEO's in my family, and I worry all the time for them all.

Luckily the 2 Polk Sherrif's are OK, and Grady Judd was right on top of it. Of course the family is now asking who shot first on that situation...and also wanting money to pay for the $6k funeral...

I have no idea who this Bubba is re-the web site but the woman obviously has a rap sheet too or they wouldn't have a mug shot

Not surprising but lots a luck on that one ! Grady Judd I would love to see in higher office (but that's another subject totally) when I was investigating moving here I totally respected him

FYI- news link with HER picture too

Heartbreaking. Also, very scary as the wife of a cop.

Very heartbreaking. We train ourselves not to think about what we are sending our husbands out to do everyday, then something like this happens and it hits hard. My prayers will be for not only their families, but their work family as well.

Bubba is a local radio personality who takes what goes on in this town VERY seriously. He can be a bit...over the top sometimes, but what he does for the town in ways of donations and such, is #1.

Agreed about Grady Judd...he really needs to be more than the local head of the sherrif around here. Polk county alone would get him into office.

Grady Judd rocks - and I wasn't trying to paint the gal in a good light, the show was focusing in on the guy and how he has walked so many times prior for cocaine use, etc....she belongs in the slammer too.

I agree Bubba is over the top some times, but he is on top of things like this and will call them out, and he usually goes above and beyond for the victims families as well.

Bubba the Love Sponge:lmao::lmao:

After 18 years, it doesn't get any easier. I have two guys who work for me in the States headed that direction....

Did the same in 06 when the K9 and the Deputy were ambushed...

RIP Brother...

Ughhhhhhhhh. This is just horrifying. I have a family members in law enforcement (my youngest brother is 3rd generation police), EMS, fire fighter, and I work in a hospital and had a patient who was an officer shot in the line of duty (and the guy who shot him was brought in right behind him, shot also). My heart breaks for their families, children growing up without their dads, a poor woman about to give birth, young widows. I can't even imagine the dread they felt when the phone rang or there was a knock at the door early this morning. It is SO sad and SO not necessary.
