Watertown, Conn. (WTNH) - A soldier from Watertown has died in Iraq and a California newspaper reports that he was one of two soldiers killed by an Army specialist in Iraq.
The Stockton Record reports that Private First Class Gebrah Noonan was killed along with another soldier and that a third person was injured.
PFC Noonan's body arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Saturday.
The Department of Defense says the two died Friday from injuries they received Thursday during a "non-combat incident" in Fallujah. Both victims were in the same battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division based in Fort Stewart, Georgia.
A base spokesperson says more information will be coming soon.
26-year-old year PFC Gebrah Noonan, a graduate of Watertown High School, was remembered Monday by his former track coach as a happy guy whose smile was contagious.
I think track is something he decided to do on a whim. And I'm just really glad that he did, Dean Street said. It let me get to know him on a different level. He was just a bundle of joy.
Friends of Noonan's say he was always a leader, but not cocky or arrogant. They said that only one meeting with the young man would generate an instant Gebrah story.
If you came through the building, he stood out with his big hair-do. He just you were drawn to him, Dean Street continued. I think everyone that knew him kinda liked him.
The flags will continue to fly in front of Noonan's home. He would want it that way, a defining characteristic of the Gebrah story.
He was certainly a patriotic guy. He would mention things about it time to time, big into politics, everything that was going on, PFC Noonans coach added. I'm not surprised that was the journey he ended up taking.
Friend also told News 8s Jamie Muro community support has been overwhelming and that the Army has been extremely helpful in this process.
Funeral arrangements for PFC Noonan are pending.
