Very interested in the DVC where to begin?

Another quick heads up- using your DVC points for a DCL cruise is less of a value than using them for DVC stays. One option that will save you points would be to rent out your points for about $11 per point and use the cash for the cruise on the years you want to cruise. It would take less points to pay for a cruise that way then paying straight with points.

What great tip! That is what I like about this board.

Another tip is to buy points for what you want to use at DVC resorts rather than intending to rent them out to cruise - renting points is an option - but not necessarily one that works for everyone. Many people feel it is pretty easy to do and have a pretty good system for doing so. Others rented once and say "never again" (I haven't rented, so I have no personal experience, it simply sounds like too much bother for me - but I'm a naturally lazy person).

I agree with Crisi- I wouldn't buy points with the intent on renting them to pay for a cruise- but if you plan on skipping the DVC resort vacation every 4 years or so to choose another option (whether it be a DCL cruise or Europe or whatever) it seems that most often renting your points to get some cash in hand is more economical than trading the points through DVC's trade options. The best bang for your buck would be to purchase the number of points you need to stay at a DVC resort based on your vacation habits.

Unless you have the same UY? But the chances of that happening are....

I don't know if I understood what your post meant. I was saying that if you wanted to reserve at GCV you have to have enough points available in GCV points for a reservation at 11 months out. You could not use your 160 points from AKV or SSR to make that reservation at GVC until 7 months out.
Use year really doesn't have anything to do with it. I also beleive if you buy your add ons from Disney you get the same use year for all additions.
I hope I said that right.

I'm new to DVC-just bought into DVC in Nov. I'm thinking that if you have the same use year at GCV and SSR or AKV, you can then book at GCV at the 11 month mark, using your GCV and SSR or AKV points. Using all the points needed from each resort at the same time. Is that possible?

No thats not how it works. You can only book your home resort for the 11 month window so you cannot use your ssr points at akv at the 11 month window you would have to wait till the 7 month window. The use year does not have anything to do with it. You would have to book ssr at ssr at the 11 month window nothing else you could do with those points till 7 months out.
I hope I have not confused you to much :lmao: because i think i have confused myself.

no - your home resort advantage only applies to THAT home resort's pts.

Got it!! Now I understand. Good to know. We do visit WDW every two years, so buying into SSR was a good move for us. We did buy at Disneyland, because there is an advantage to the founding member thing FOR US. We go to DL once a month and stay there two times a year. We wanted to have the advantage of buying into GVC. This really works for us. I know we are not the average and I looked into DVC for a long time before we bought our points. Noe I ill have a better understanding of the amount of pointd I will need to buy.
THANKS for clearing up an aspect of how to use the DVC points.
