very horrible night with my 2 year old

Last night my 2 year old became unresponsive, blue, not breathing in her high chair. We thought she was choking. Tried to clear her airway, called 911, she was not breathing and blue, I know cpr well( work in ICU) and I panicked, my mom started breathing for her, she did wake up.....long story she had a seizure due to a rapid rise in her temp, she had been fine all day, was 103.7 at ER. She is ok now, think it was viral, all labs normal. I want to tell everyone to get a Basic CPR class, my mom and I are RN so we know what to do, and I lost it, my husband would have been clueless. It will probably be your own family that you use it on. I will never forget the image of my mom breathing for my lifeless, blue, baby girl.....I am so glad she kept her wits, I think I was just screaming. Thanks for listening, and again she is all ok now.

So glad she is okay. I'm with you, everyone should take classes for CPR. I hate to admit that I'm behind in being updated for myself. Your post is a good reminder to keep up to date in CPR training.

How awful!!!! Did she have a febrile seizure? My DD had one while we were vacationing in Maine when she was 1 1/2. Her temperature went up so quickly that she started shaking, her eyes were rolled back and she was unresponsive. Thankfully she did not stop breathing but we called 911 and she was taken to the hospital. They checked her out and everything was fine after that. She's now 6 and hasn't had another seizure. It was really awful because I had no idea what was going on and we were terrified. I can't imagine what you must have went through with having to give her CPR. My husband and I have both taken infant/child and adult CPR in the past. I think we need to do it again as a refresher though. It's definitely something everyone should do.

This same thing happened to us 3 weeks ago. It was extremely horrific and I still can't stop picturing my DS (2) that way. My husband is a CNA and he was just screaming. We called 911 and it was the longest 6 minutes waiting for paramedics. It was dinner time for us as well so we also assumed choking. I'm finally "ok" about it but I still tear up when I think about how he looked and how we thought we were saying goodbye.

As a Girl Scout leader, I take the CPR and First Aid courses every year, but I always pray I won't need them. I also pray that, if I every have to use that knowledge, I will remember what to do!

I think you're right, it could be a good thing to bring up. I believe it happens more often than people realize and it's very scary. It also happened to one of my twin grandsons, more than once. Each time precipitated by a spike in temperature. Very scary for my DD. He's almost 2 1/2 now and it's been a few months since his last seizure...thank goodness.

So glad this situation turned out OK. I am so sorry you had such a scare. Well wishes for your daughter and your family. I am a nurse and I completely would panic if a family member, let alone a child had an emergency like this. Hugs to you guys.

Same thing happened to us when our ds was 2. Febrile seizure when his fever spiked to 104 very suddenly. My dh had to do CPR on home While I was on the phone with 911. Very scary. Ever since then we stay on top of his fevers with Motrin and/or Tylenol and Luke warm baths. Fortunately, it has not happened again.

That is terrifying. I'm glad she's okay. I really should take one of those courses. My DH is thankfully certified. But I wouldn't know what to do at all.
