Very early research into Disneyland trip

Our family just got back from our first trip to Walt Disney World. We had a great time! But we had not really planned to go back. It was sort of a once in a lifetime trip for us. However, the kids have already asked (of course), and I would like to see it at the holidays. However, it got me thinking maybe it would be nice to go to Disneyland instead for a change of pace. I did tons of research on WDW. I had been once as a kid and had been thinking about it ever since so I had looked at books off & on forever.
So now I come to the Disneyland experts to ask where to start?
We spent 9 days (including arrival & departure) at WDW with 7 days at parks. Disneyland seems smaller. Could we go 6 days including arrival & departure and get a 4 day pass? Is that enough? I have a son who's 7 now, daughter almost 9. I think my son would really love Cars Land.
For those who've been to both, does it require as much planning as WDW? I don't mind because I really enjoy planning. I planned from July/Aug 2011-May for this trip. I don't think we'd probably go til Dec 2014 because we have another big international trip planned next May so we'd need to save up.
Any & all suggestions for best things to see, websites, etc as last time I just googled to find things, including this site.
Thanks!!

I haven't been in a while but from reading WDW vs. DLR threads and Hydroguy's tips for WDW vets, my understanding is that even through DLR is physicallly smaller, the amount of attractions, entertsinment and food is comparable.

I would say with kids those age (perfect age :wizard:) and with a good chunk of planning ahead a 5 day pass would make the most sense for being able to enjoy everything there is to offer without rushing.

Thanks! I found it and read a lot of it today. Quite informative & lots to go back to over time. Thanks for taking the time to do that!
