Ok folks here goes!
Have just closed,we have 190 pts,use year oct.
If i wanted to make reservations say tomorow to vacation in nov this year, am i right in thinking i would be using this years points?
But what if I wanted to vacation this year in nov but needed to borrow some point out of 2002 use year, could I do this?
If so what if I then wanted to vacation again next year ,To do this I would have to wait until after oct2002 and then I would be in effect borrowing 2003 points?
Oh god what have i started,I am very confused and DH is getting irritated with me!!!!

Here's how it works.

October 2000 - You received points to use for trips taken between October 1, 2000 and September 30, 2001. You could also bank these (subect to deadlines) into your 2001 Use Year.

On October 1, 2001 you will receive points to use for vacations taken between October 1, 2001 and September 30, 2002.

Points are used during the Use Year. Reservations are made according to the 11/7 windows.

For your November vacation you would have to bank your October 2000 points or else use the October 2001 points, doing something different with this year's points.

It'll all become clear to you before long. ;)

If I'm reading your post correctly, you have 190 points, use year 2000, that you just acquired upon closing. You want to consider making Nov reservations. You can call now and make your reservations using your current 190 points. Member Services always used your most recent points first. So, they will use your 2000 points first before they start using your 2001 points, even though your reservation is after the beginning of your 2001 use year. Since your reservations would be after your 10/1 2001 use year date, you can also use your 190 points from 2001 for your Nov reservation. Also, since the reservations are for a time during your 2001 use year, you could borrow from your 190 points that you will get 10/1 2002. So, for your November reservations, you have at your disposal, 570 points. Just be sure and do something quickly with your 190 points from 2000. Either make a reservation with them or bank them. Your banking deadline for an Oct use year is the end of March. If you bank your 2000 points, they have to be used during your 2001 use year. So if you bank them now and then decide to vacation in September, you would have to borrow 2001 use year points. But if you bank them now and then decide to vacation from Oct 2001-Sep 2002, then MS would use your banked points first then they would use your 2001 points. That way, if you don't use all of of your 2001 points, you have until March of next year to bank them into the next use year. Wow! It does seem complicated doesn't it when you write it all out, but never fear, it will become very clear to you with use. Have fun and welcome home!

MS will not use your 2000 points for a 2001 Use Year reservation unless you tell them to bank the points. If they were already banked, it would be automatic for MS to use them first. MS will not automatically bank or borrow points. You have to request it.

You don't have to bank those points in order to use them in November 2001. As long as the transactions are made before the banking deadline, you can use 2000 points any way you choose within your 11/7 mo window. MS will always use the oldest eligible points first for any reservation that you make. It is correct that MS will not bank or borrow without you requesting it, but what I am saying is that you are not required to bank them before you are going to use them, even if your reservation is in your next use year. They will not use your 2001 points before your 2000 points are gone, as long as your 2000 points remain outside of your banking deadline. Your banking deadline is the end of March though, so if you're sure you're not going to use the points before October 1, then it would be wise to go ahead and bank them.

You would have to bank October 2000 points to use them in November 2001. October 2000 points are good from October 1, 2000 to September 30, 2001. So they would not be good for November 2001 unless they are banked into the October 2001 use year (for stays from October 1, 2001 to September 30, 2002). If you don't bank the 2000 points, they cannot be used for stays after September 30,2001.

I agree with Debbie. You can't make a reservation for time outside your Use Year using the previous year's points without banking. You can make the reservation using that year's points. Later, if you bank the points you can ask MS to adjust your reservations and use the banked points. (I'm unsure when the banking deadlines are for Oct. so these aren't being considered.)

In this example,

200 points to use by 9/30/01.
Call tomorrow and make a reservation for a week in November 2001. MS knows I'll have my OOctober 2001 allotment for this reservation.
Next month I decide I won't be going anywhere before November. I bank my October 2000 points. I then ask MS to please use the banked points first for my November reservation.

PROBLEM: If I don't call MS and bank my points, they won't presume that I meant to bank the points for the November reservation. The points will need to be used by 9/30/01 and can't be used for the November ressie.

Well, that's just not the case, as long as she makes the reservation before her banking deadline, which is March 31. I'm sorry we disagree here, but we had the exact same situation when we first purchased our membership. We had a June 1 use year. We closed in August. We made reservations for the following July using our current use year points. There was no banking involved, they automatically used our current use year points first and then began using the points from the next use year.

We haven't closed yet, but our guide told us to go ahead and make reservations for October 2001, as we already had a vacation planned for then, of which I already cancelled the reservations we had for the Swan. We did the Magical Beginnings program, bought 300 points and sold 150 points back. Our guide told us we could bank the 150 points from October 2000 (use year October), and use them for our October 2001 reservation. When I called MS today to make the reservation, she would not let me use the Oct 2000 points yet, as we hadn't closed, and told us you cannot bank or borrow until closing, so she applied our Oct 2001 points to our reservation. The MS staff member told me to call when we closed to inform them to change our reservation to use our banked points first. I'm assuming they don't just do this, you have to call to instruct them on what you want done with your points. There was a paper included in our forms to bank our leftover 150 points from the Oct 2000 use year. From what I read, I had until July to bank the rest of my points. Please correct me if I misunderdstood.

The points they got in Oct 2000 are good only until September 30, 2001, so you cannot have a November 2001 vacation with those points because they expire before your vacation unless they are banked into the 2001 use year, it doesn't matter that you made the reservation, the points had to be banked.

I am positve because I just went through this, I had to bank my Sept. 2000 points into the 2001 use year.0

I agree, the 2000 points must be banked in order to use them in November 2001. I think I understand the confusion here. Sometimes in situations like this, when you tell MS what you want to do, they automatically do what is necessary to make the reservation--like banking the points then using them for the reservation but they don't mention to you the precise steps they're going through on their computer. They should (because technically you should get a banking number) but sometimes they don't. This happened to me several years ago--I was a new member and didn't even realize what I should be asking. The next time I made ressies, the MS lady specifically said that first she would bank the points and then she would make the reservation using the banked points and confirmed that was what I wanted to do. I think MS is much more specific now. So when you call to use the Oct 2000 points for the Nov 2001 ressie, tell MS what you want to do. They'll tell you to bank the points. You'll say OK and you'll tell them to use the banked 2000 points for the ressie. Be specific. If you're confused, ask questions until you totally understand BEFORE you do anything.

So if it is true that you cannot bank points until you close - If I want to make a ressie for next year, using this year's banked points (which are not banked yet - I should close next Wed.)do I have to wait til I close? Or can I make the ressie with next year's points and after I close change them to the banked points from this year?
Please have patience with me - I'll eventually catch on!

Humbug- you can also ask your vacation guide to assist with your reservation and banking. They are often quite adept at getting things done.

Points must either be banked (in accordance with proper dealines) or used before the end of their use year. With an Oct use year- current points (from Oct. 2000) MUST be used for a reservation which ends by Sep 30, 2001 or MUST have been banked. Once banked, they can be used for a reservation which starts after Oct1,2001 and ends by Sep.30,2002.
As correctly stated above, you must request that points be banked- it will not automatically happen. If you call and ask for a reservation in Nov- using Oct 2000 points- they may assume you want to bank those points and do so for you, but they will provide a banking number for that transaction and a reservation confirmation number. MS has gotten very precise about the way they handle these banking issues and it does get confusing at times. Good Luck!
