I thought those were japanese messages. Our computers can't do those symbols, so they just do squares. I coudl be wrong though!

Yep. It's characters of another language that your computer doesn't have a way of interpreting them. If I get any (although my computer seems to read those), I just sent them on their way.

My computer can do Japanese symbols (you can download/install the component) and many are still turning up as boxes.

Maybe another language. There are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese, Thailandi, Indian and various Middle Eastern languages showing up. You may have gotten one that your computer can't read.
