I finally woke up this morning without vertigo....first time in 5 days. I woke up with it for the first time ever on Monday am (coincidentally, had to get up extra early that morning to make our dining ressies - our 180 + 10 day). It was awful...I could hardly walk, the whole world felt as if it was tilting and moving. That brought on the nausea and everything else. Doctor gave me some good drugs, but they made me so sleepy. I feel like I've missed a week of my life. Couldn't do anything - no driving, couldn't read, couldn't be on the computer for long periods, got really cranky with the kids. Poor DH had to run himself ragged getting the kids to/from school and then to all their activities. Just wanted to share my elation on finally waking up without it! Thanks for listening!

Yea for you! I had it once REALLY bad. I couldn't even move without throwing up, for a whole day. And then it took two more days before I felt like a normal person again. Five days would be pretty awful.

What causes it?

Glad you are feeling better, op!

What causes it?

Glad you are feeling better, op!

This is the tough part. I have suffered from sudden onset and sudden resolution of vertigo. In my case, they think it was TIA, a Transient Ischemic Accident, better known as a ministroke. Essentially, there is an occlusion (clot) that reduces oxygen to a part of the brain where your balance center is, then the clot goes away.

Other causes can be an inner ear infection, a bump on the head, migraine just to name a few

I've had severe vertigo attacks randomly for 4 years now. Mine have never been completely figured out, so they just call it Meniere's Disease. But mine usually only last a few hours. However, those hours are just complete hell and then it takes a day to recover from it. One time it lasted 12 hours and I ended up in the hospital. I can't even imagine 5 days of it! My sympathies to the OP. I hope yours is a one time thing.

I can stop my attacks sometimes with a small dose of valium. It calms the balance center I've been told. It is hard to describe just how bad vertigo can feel. To me...it's like a form of torture.

My dh suffers from vertigo and usually his problems occur in the Spring or Fall (allergy season). He can always tell when it is coming on because his ears feel like they are full of fluid.

One thing that has helped him in the past are some physical therapy type procedures that can be done at home. I can't remember the exact instructions, but you can find them by googling it. He says that the maneuvers help him much more than anything that he has been perscribed.

You have my sympathies!! From seeing dh suffer, I know that it is a miserable condition to have.

I had horrible vertigo when I was going through menopause. I didn't know I was in menopause because it started when I was 36. Caffeine and too much sugar brought it on as well as lots of movement-grocery store looking from side to side. I also found that lots of elevator riding triggered it. I suggest you do some serious journalling so you can figure out fast what common factors might be triggers. Keep track of food and activity.
Hope it never comes back!!!

Meniere's runs rampant in my family. I have so many relatives with it and my poor brother has it bad and also has hearing issues.

I was so embarrassed when I went to the Dr just sick as a dog 2 weeks ago. I was feeling like my head was spinning widly in my head. When they tried to get me to stand on the scale, I fell off. Well..... turns out I only had a completely impacted ear. :rolleyes1 I felt like an idiot. Normally I can tell when my eye get stopped up but I missed this one entirely.

I feel for you! My first episode several years ago lasted 2 days, and it was hell! I couldn't lift my head without feeling like I was going to throw up. I've had a few episodes since then, but they've all been much shorter duration - a few minutes to a few hours long.

Thanks everyone! So glad to be feeling better - actually got to drive again today! :woohoo: The doctor thinks mine were due to allergies possibly - I had fluid in my ears and had 2 migraines in the week and a half leading up to this. The pollen has been HORRIBLE here. But man, the last 5 days have been rough. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Hoping to never have another attack again!!!

I had vertigo once and it lasted for days. Was a terrible feeling. So glad you are feeling better.

I'm sorry for those of you who have gone through it/are going through vertigo. It sounds horrible! My mom has had a few bouts of vertigo in the past. Over the past four months or so, she has had mild bouts of dizziness when turning her head a certain way.

I read somewhere that it may have to do with "crystals" in your ear that get loose?

I was watching The Doctors TV show, and they briefly talked about vertigo on one episode. They talked about a possible remedy - it's a device that you clip onto a baseball cap, and it guides you through the Epley maneuver. You can google DizzyFix if you are interested. Unfortunately it is expensive, though you can get a discount if you have a doctor's prescription.

Yes, the crystals getting loose can cause Positional Vertigo, which is usually a milder condition. Unfortunately it does not explain all vertigo. I was tested and don't have that kind of vertigo so the Epley exercises won't help. Mine is a violent version that comes on without warning. Luckily, it doesn't happen that often, so I try not to dwell on it. Glad the OP is feeling better and hope they stay that way!

OP here again...seems as if I'm back to square 1. Well, not quite as bad as day 1 was, but it's backmthis morning. I don't understand...and I'm very frustrated. Going to do some research on the exercises to see if it's possibly the "crystals" in my ears, but it's hard to be n the computer for very long.

dngnb8 - can I ask if youhad another symptoms? How did the doctors determine they were TIAs?
