Hello - In my youth I could ride coasters all day long. Trips to Cedar Point filled my summers. As an adult, I get vertigo from doing somersaults. Upside down coasters can trigger my vertigo as well.

I'm visiting Universal in May/June and would like to ride everything. Has anyone defeated vertigo and do you have any tips you can share on training exercises to get your body accustomed to inversions?

Thanks,
Ben

I am trying the Scolpamine patch during my trip in April, but I still may avoid the upside down coasters. I usually do Bonine. It helps with most rides, but not motion rides, so I'm hoping the patch will help.

Bonine bonine bonine. Start taking it 24 hours before you ride anything. You'll probably want to take one in the morning and one with your lunch every day and then keep taking it for 24 hours after you are done riding. Works like a charm

Aside from medications, I have found that when I am well hydrated my symptoms aren’t as bad. If I’m slightly dehydrated, intense coasters seem to trigger my symptoms more.
There’s also vestibular physical therapists who specialize in treating vertigo. I used to work at a clinic with vestibular physical therapists and their patients had good outcomes, I have never tried it myself though. It might be worth looking into, especially if your insurance will cover it :)

If your vertigo exists beyond just amusement park rides, go get it diagnosed. I am one of those folks who did “vestibular rehabilitation therapy” and I now swear by it. My problem wasn’t due to crystals in my ear that the Epley maneuvers help, but that is a pretty common problem to so you try those as it’s the at home versions are free and easy to try.

But I’m second the hydration thing, too! That pretty key for me, too. Dehydration and being tired make it much more likely for me to have vertigo.
