And, if you do, is there any way that you have been able to do things that would set off the vertigo... by taking meds beforehand, etc.????

I am not talking about motion sickness or an actual 'fear' of heights...
But a true Vertigo, the very real physiological reaction, spinning, balance, etc....

We did a tour at the Grand Canyon a couple years ago, and man, it hit me pretty bad.
I was still able to enjoy it. But would never want to get hit with vertigo any worse than that.

So, now I am thinking about future vacations, and how I might possibly be able to enjoy things like sightseeing, or even helicopter flightseeing.

Maybe I'll have stay behind and leave this kind of thing to DH and DS...
Darned vertigo!!!

I had Vertigo about 3 years ago, it was brought on by an inner ear infection and it lasted a few months. I was dizzy just sitting working at my desk. It was lousy, but it went away thank goodness. Has it ever hit you before or was this the first time? Antihistimines are known to help in some cases. Good luck!

Several years ago I had a very bad case of vertigo. Ever since then, sometimes all it take is for me to move my head too fast or to move into a certain position and it sets off a mini case that only lasts a few seconds.

The are maneuvers/exercises you can do to lessen it. If you search for Benign Positional Vertigo, you will probably see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for this, I'm off to google!

I have it, but I mostly just stay away from edges of things, don't look down and try to ignore it. I think it's related to my eyesight (I get double vision).

I remember as a college student following my friends out onto a roof once to chat in the middle of the night. I'm a non-drinker, and yet I swear I could feel the roof tipping underneath me and the stars were sliding around above me. I just sat myself right back against the window and hung on for dear life, and ignored the people making fun of me. After awhile, I could chat, but the feeling never really went away.

I also get it when I'm standing at the edge of the ocean, and everything feels like it's falling away from me. But if I just jump into the water it goes away. :thumbsup2

Sometimes it just happens when I'm walking, but that's always very mild and I chalk it up to having bad eyes.

I'm curious to know what other people have to say about it!

I get vertigo a lot. Just had it last weekend. My ears still ring from it and once in awhile I feel like I have to "catch" myself from tipping over.:upsidedow

That's me. I have been diagnosed with benign positional paroxysmal vertigo - BPPV. It's harmless but a very scary and disorienting feeling. When I put my head back and to the right a little the whole room turns sideways. I have to whip my head back the other way to get everything to stop. The doc said it's caused by microscopic crystals that have broken off the eardrum and are free-floating in my inner ear fluid.

My mom has Meniere's Disease and she has HORRIBLE vertigo episodes at times. Hers are terrible because there is no position she can switch to for it to stop, and she gets terribly, horribly nauseated. One time she was bedridden for an entire week. She has switched to a special diet to treat Meniere's and that has helped tremendously.

you should get evaluated by a PT who specializes in balance. Our rehab hospital has a hearing and balance center, and they do amazing things in just a few sessions.

I've had it for years. I was originally diagnosed with Meniere's, now after further testing they're saying it's neurological. My ENT did some kind of test where I wore computerized goggles that measured eye movement or something like that. Anyway, that series of tests revealed that my eyes do some kind of side to side jerky movements that I'm not even aware of. I'm waiting on a referal to a neurologist. In the meantime, meclazine helps a little to tone down the "I'm getting sick to my stomach" feeling. I also make sure my ears stay clear, no clogged feelings during allergy season, and take motion sickness pills if I have to let someone else drive. I also avoid all alcohal and won't get on any rides that spin, dip, drop, etc. If I have to scroll when using the computer I look away as much as possible. Hopefully the neurologist will have something to at least treat the symptoms.
