Disney Updates: Workers were putting finishing touches on their new ramp. A project manager reports it’s made of a special composite which, unlike wood, will not threaten bare feet with splinters and will be stronger and more durable against the corrosive salty sea air which affects everything so aversely as beachside homeowners know so well. The end can be removed when high tides and storms threaten. A source says she got an inch-long splinter from the wooden ramp which really hurt. Disney’s made a smart move with these new ramp and beachside stair changes.

This sounds like it may help the problem of the steps washing away. Also, I found the note about needing a room key to access the beach interesting. It's a shame that pool crashers are such a problem.

Pam, you may have OKW in your name, but you're a gold mine of info about VB, thanks!

Thanks, Pam.

DH is heading down there in a few hours with his cousin. He's going to try his hand at surfing! (Keep your eye out in those online newspapers you watch - he's liable to make the news! :)

Anyway - I'll send the camera with him. Maybe he'll have time to take a pic of the ramp...

we were there over easter and there were 2 men working on the rails and we didnt use the ramp part because of the 2 workers but did use the stairs. the wood seemed like wood/recycle plastic, or something, all of us came up barefoot from the beach so we can wash our feet off from the sand and the so called wood was fine on the feet, i dont know how someone could have gotten a 1" splinter though, i do have to say , the ramp and stairs look very nice, this was our first trip so i dont know what they had before.

::yes:: Great news

Looking forward to a nice relaxing stay coming up soon.

I wonder if it is that trelix type decking you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. I also wonder if it will get really hot in the sun?

Hi,
We just got back from Vero yesterday and it looks like they have finished the ramp. Not really seen anything like the material they were using before ( I'm from the UK!! ) but it looked a bit like immitation wood although felt like plastic. I would imagine it would be very warm to the touch on a hot day.
Had a great time there and had a Beach Cottage to ourselves as our friends couldn't make it at the last minute. How extravagant is that..?.

Mick, you should have called, it's only a two hour flight for me. ;)

I'm curious if anyone has seen Peggy Fisher the source I've found for much of this information. From her column, it seems that she walks the beach most every morning. The picture of her swimming with dolphins does not compare with another picture I saw. She appears to be a rather striking woman and I believe she usually walks with an umbrella/parasol. Anyone noticed her in the mornings? It's been great having someone who gives just about daily reports of what's taking place at Vero. I think the Vero newspaper is working on a story about her and her Global Lifeguard reports.

I have very important information to report back from my DH concerning Vero....

9+ foot surfboards WILL fit in the Inn Building elevators!!

(end of news bulletin)

haha

They were getting up this morning at 6:00 (yuk!) to try and surf for an hour, then come back to the room, shower up, then go down to Shutters for "Mickey waffles."

... I'm SO jealous!

Beth,

I'm sooooo relieved! That question was on the top of my list for the next trip. LOL!

Sounds like your hubby is taking to surfing -- maybe more Vero points are in your future?

It sounds like the same thing that the National Parks are useing at Yellowstone. We were there three years ago and noticed it for their benches.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check it out, I'd like to make my deck out of that composite material, no mainenance.

HaHa, Pam!

I talked to him again later today. Apparently they got up around 6:00 and drove up to Sebastian Inlet (5-6 miles north?).

They were the only ones out there, and, all of a sudden, his cousin said, "Scott - look at this!" It was this big, black shadow! (After freaking out for a moment), then he said, "It's got whiskers!" :)

They were in the midst of three manatees!

So for those of you hoping to catch sight of some manatees while at Vero, in addition to the spot down by the power station, looks like Sebastian Inlet is another good spot!

And Sebastian Inlet is nearby! Thanks for the info.

Bobbi:D

They use this stuff on the beaches in Cape Cod now. It holds up much better than the wood, and yes, no splinters, but it can get hot, so bring your flip flops!
