I have just returned from a stay at SSR and Vero Beach. Even thought I have been a member of DVC for a few years now, this was my first stay at a DVC resort (our previous trips have been with DCL and off property). I found SSR to meet and exceed my expatiations (the only thing I did have a problem with is that they charge you for internet access. I have to travel a little and found just about any hotel I have stayed in, high speed internet access was free and usually Wi-Fi).
But at the end of our vacation we spent three days at Vero Beach. The cast members we dealt with were great and the food was above par. But the resort in general seems to be showing its age. They are repairing the roofs, but the building (15) we were staying in seem to need some work. The front door had a fair amount of rust on it and the dryer just did not want to dry clothes. I also found the cleaning of the resort below Disney standard. When we check into our room the dishwasher was full with dirty dishes and full (I do not put full blame on the house keeping for this, the previous guest should have done their part). There was a dirty town left on the balcony and there was a used band aid out side our door for days (I picked it up on the end of our second day). We also rented bikes for an hour and round the bikes to be horrible. The brakes on the first bike I took (with my child) did not work, the second bike child seat was extremely dirty, and the bike had a lot of rust on them. What get me, is that we have to pay for the use of the bikes and they we all in awful shape. One last thing is that suppressed me is that the room had a VCR instead of DVD players.
Over all, the stay was fine, but not what I expect Disney to be. I know that Vero Beach has been around for ten years and are hoping that this is not what will happen with all DVC resorts. Has anyone else had this type of experience in any of the other older resorts? Thank you.
