We are thinking of going to Vero Beach for a week in July. I will be traveling with my DH and my sons who are 16, 13, and 1 and the older kids will probably each bring a friend. I have never stayed there before so I have a few questions............

1. What airport do we fly into (coming from Connecticut)? Also, are there any airlines that have a direct flight?

2. Once we land........how do we get to the resort if we are not renting a car?

3. Is it a MUST to rent a car at this resort?

4. What are the Best activities for teenagers and what are the best activities for a 22 month old?

5. Are there rentals available for the ocean (ie: wakeboards, etc.)?

6. Last, but not least, please tell me all the reasons why you love to visit Vero Beach! At some point, I would like to experience all the DVC resorts! :earboy2: I just hope I can handle being in Florida, but not with ::MickeyMo !!!

I just made plans to go from 7-9 - 7-14. I have the same questions. I think I am going to fly into West Palm beach, 90 miles away. Melbourn is the closest to the resort, but can not find a deal. I was think of renting a car for one day to go from the airport to the resort and then turn it in. Not sure if this will work?????.

Melbourne is the closest airport and is very convenient. Finding flights that agree with your schedule can be difficult. For us it works well -- we seldom can get a direct flight anywhere, so a connection through Atlanta gets us there.

Many people fly into Orlando and drive. It's about 90 minutes. Advantages to Orlando are more direct flights and prices are usually a little lower than going into Melbourne. The other option is West Palm Beach - we haven't tried that one mainly because flights are more limited there for us.

I would definitely rent a car for your stay. Most folks like to go off site to explore as well as for more dining options. We're always so happy to be at the beach that we seldom leave the property -- but it's just DH and I.

Beach rentals include chairs, umbrellas, small cabanas, boogie boards, jet skis. Many folks go to Walmart and buy chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards. We'll probably buy a boogie board there next year -- rentals can add up fast.

We love Vero Beach for relaxing, walking on the beach, reading on the beach (with the occasional snooze!!). There are lots of activities for young children, but not as many for teenagers. The pool is great, mini golf by the pool is always popular.

Hope you have a wonderful trip -- Vero is magical

Welcome to the DIS ktmmt!!!

I'm sure someone here on the DIS that has stayed at Vero Beach will be able to help us out. I'm still stuck with the plans myself!

Advice about airports is on the money. A rental car gives you a lot more freedom -- especially if you hit a rainy day or two. Plus, what it will cost you to arrange transportation from Orlando or WPB will be close to what you'll pay for the rental.

Just returned from a short stay (2 nights) at Vero. It was our first time and I thought I'd just put down the following thoughts that may help you.
Our group was 4 adults, and 3 boys, 1-13, and 2 ten year olds. our trip was combined with other visiting in Florida so we had rental cars and flew out of Orlando.

The pool is great, the kids loved the slide. The hot tub gets crowded fast. The mini golf near the pool is fun, but not that elaborate or challenging (didn't compare to the WDW courses, but being Disney, better than most resort areas).

There is a ping pong table (1), shuffleboard (1), basketball hoop (half court - 1), tennis courts (2). There's a croquet lawn where activities such as croquet, lawn bowling etc. go on. We saw many times the teens had pick up football games going on there, frisbee, nurf ball etc. (they provide lots of balls etc at the Eb and Flo's rental area).

There are lists of daily acitivies that are mostly geared toward the younger kids. Our 10 year olds were on the cusp of the interest scale there. Again being boys the crafts etc. didn't draw them in. I did see teen girls doing more of the crafts etc. though.

There are bikes to rent, along with the beach items mentioned by scootert above. There is a tennis pro available for lessons, they did have organized teen dodgeball and that was a huge hit with the kids. Must have been 40 kids participating in that event. There's also an arcade (small). They have sing along camp fires and make smores. We participated in a star gazing activity that was amazing -beautiful clear sky and without a lot of ambient light just magnificent views.

We were there this past week and even with the Christmas/New Years holidays it didn't seem that crowded. However the "fancier" restaurant books up quickly and Shutters, the other on site restaurant was great for us. Good food at all meals and we were able to get a table without problem (July may be a different story here as well).

There is a counter service/bar by the pool but the service when we were there was painfully slow and they don't have another option like Roaring Forks at VWL or Beach Club's Marketplace etc. I feel they could really use that.

There are other things to do such as scuba lessons, snokeling, surfing, fishing, kayaking etc. but these are additional fees and some are off property. They may be the types of things to add interest to the older teen.

I would say that yes a car is necessary. For shopping, eating off property, going to local points of interest or some of these other activities (Surfing).

If relaxing and laying on the beach all day is what you are looking for this is the perfect place! If the kids are always on the go and have trouble amusing themselves you may have to get a little creative. 2 nights/3 days for us was perfect. The kids loved being able to go off on their own to many things and make friends with other kids there to do things with.

It's a relativley small place compared with the WDW resorts and that has its good and bad points. I think that July is "in season" and there will probably be a lot more going on.

We had a wonderful time and look forward to going back again. The kids did have their "I'm bored" moments but not one of them was happy to leave and more than once referred to the place as "paradise".

I hope some of these randomly flowing thoughts helps. It will really depend on what your kids are like - especially the 16 year old and how easily they might make friends with other kids to help pass the time they can't relax during. But one thing I think you will want is a car.

Hopefully others who've stayed during the summer months can advise you better.

Enjoy.

I just checked, West Palm Beach is defferently cheaper to fly into then Orlando.

Thanks for the great replies so far!! I guess I will call Member Services on Tuesday and check availability for July. I will worry about the airfare later!

IMO, I would fly into Melbourne. www.mlbair.com

My parents just flew down from Michigan a few months ago. We were very impressed with the airport. Nice and quaint.

They paid about $50 more to fly into Melbourne rather than Orlando but it would have cost them at least that much to get from Orlando to VB.

They took the shuttle from the resort back to the airport (they used one of our vehicles while they were here.) The Melbourne Airport Shuttle was on time to pick them up and my Dad said they were very professional. The cost was only about $50 for the 3 of them.

You probably would want to rent a car at the airport. We have done many trips to Vero without ever leaving the resort.

Check www.Delta.com for specials. My parents flew out of Chicago and connected in Atlanta.

I think you'll love Vero. :sunny:

I have two older teenage sons and they always have a great time at Vero. Mostly just hanging out- doing the beach- I second buying some boogie boards at Walmart after you get there- it is cheaper- then just give them to another family before you leave. My boys also rented bikes, fished etc. They also liked the stores at the outlet mall and we went to a movie at the movie theater at the regular mall. My boys went walking on the beach at night and saw one of the huge turtles up on shore covering up her eggs. They were really "wowed" and had never seen anything like this huge turtle bigger than they were. It was magical.
