Vero Beach Info & Jellyfish??

Hello! We will be staying at VB for the first time in 2 weeks. Can anyone tell me how the beach is as far as if there are any steep drop offs and how strong the tide is? Also, GMA ran a story about little jellyfish (I think they're called "Mauve Jellyfish" that have invaded the area, resulting in numerous people being stung.

I have very adventurous boys (ages 12 & 14) who think that they are invincible and can handle anything, so any help you can provide will help this mother's nerves.

We went the first week in April for spring break. They have evened the beach out, no steep drop offs. We didn't encounter any jellyfish, although that was a few months ago. DH and DS were out in the ocean jumping waves. Hope you have a great trip! We LOVE it there.

Please sit your boys down and give them a stern lecture on Ocean safety, this is not your neighborhood swimming pool especially if they are not used to being in the ocean.

If there are rip tides, there will be a warning posted at the entrance to the beach and I would never go out further than knee dip when rip tides are posted.

Also check the postings for sharks, as Vero Beach is known to have problems at times.

If there are lots jelly fish are still around then, basically you are going to be confined to the pool.

If there are no riptides, sharks or jelly fish, they will be fine.

Check and respect the beach flag system, Red Flag I would never swim in the ocean.

When we were there a couple of years ago in the summer jelly fish were not the problem it was man of war, which are similar to jelly fish. There were hundreds of them washed up on the beach and my DW got one wrapped around here ankle just standing ankle deep in the water. It left a pretty good mark around her ankle for awhile, not to mention the pain. They said at the resort if there is a strong easterly wind it will bring them all to shore. It was pretty nasty though, it was hard to even sit on the beach there were so many of them washed up. It really soured my kids on Vero Beach.

We were there in May 2011.

There is no lifeguard. The waves were 3 to 5 feet. I assume this can change based on the storms in the area at the time of your visit. Part of the beach is steep while part of it is more sloped. There is a drop off shortly after entering the water, the distance of which changes with the tide.

DH(who is a strong swimmer) and a few people were in the water.He saw no jellyfish. Your kids could have fun with skimmer boards and not need to go into the deep water. Most people were at the pool which is great. However, the lovebugs were more numerous at the pool. We were told they should be gone in June.

We rented an umbrella and lounge chairs at the beach. The lounge chairs have seen a lot of use and the pad on the lounge was disgustingly filthy, we made sure to cover it with our towel.

The seafood buffet on Thursday was very good.

We enjoyed the banjo player on the back porch and the music in the Green Cabin Room.

The spa area was very nice.

There were lifeguards at the park North of the resort at one time. They've made a lot of cuts so I don't know if they are still there.

You can look and see what flag they have out on any particular day.

There are man o war (still not sure how to spell that) on the beach sometimes. They look like little blue blobs.

Just use caution and you will be fine.

I got stung by a man-o-war last June at VB. The rental people on the beach have lotion for it they gave me for free.

We were at vero over memorial day. No sharks or jellies, but the rip current was strong!

It's good to hear that they smoothed out the "cliff" down to the beach ... at least that's what I hope you mean

We were there a year ago. Lots of shark fins ... but no jellyfish. The tide can be very strong. I was in up to my knees, got pulled and lost my balance, and honestly almost drowned. I managed to get myself out, but my legs were cut up & I was bleeding pretty bad. I will NEVER go in the water there again. My family will stick to the pool.

If you decide to go in, you really need to pay attention the flags. Don't even wade in if there are rip warnings.
