I'm planning our first trip to Vero Beach in June. It will be DH and I, DS6 and DD5. Being from the midwest, we've never spent a day on the beach before :confused3 can someone suggest how we should "set up camp"? We're driving, and will have room to bring whatever we need.

I was thinking: well stocked softside cooler, buckets and shovels for the kids, beach towels, beach shoes, tons of sunblock, sunglasses, hats. But not sure what to do regarding the following:

Should I take towels or chairs for DH and I?
Umbrella or no umbrella?
What are the rental cabanas like? (Size, practicality, etc)
Are there any rules (against bringing things etc) that we should know about?
Is the fast food (Bleacher's?) close enough to pick up a picnic lunch for the beach?

Any other tips you can offer? Thanks!

Since you're driving, I would bring a hard sided cooler. Your food and drinks will stay colder. I would also bring my own chairs, beach umbrella, towels, and large blanket to lay on. The cabanas are fine, but usually just big enough for two chairs, not sure if there are larger ones at Vero. The food at Bleacher's is typical Disney fast food and would be fine for lunch. Since you have a car, buying sandwich stuff is also a possibility for you.

IMO, go with a beach umbrella. The cabanas don't allow air to flow through and get much too hot.

I've found that a bucket of well iced Coronas tame the midday sun better than any umbrella or cabana can. At least thats the way I remember it.

We fly and stay 3-4 days in a 2bdrm villa. We bring insulated hot/cold bag for drinks on the beach, ziploc bags, sunscreen, neatsheet, coffee and filters, laundry tabs, bar of soap (small ones don't last), small rubber balls (play catch in ocean), frisbee, can cozzies and a deck of cards.

OK, other then money... We don't have very much space with a little one's toys and a car seat, we really just brought sun screen and bug spray. We also always bring different size zip bags. The kids meals come with a bucket at the pool so that worked for us. The only other thing I wished for was either a neat sheet, like Halle suggested, or beach towels. We really didn't have room for the towels so just made due with the pool towels.

Money huh??? I love that--there never seems to be enough--if I could only find that tree it grows on..maybe in Vero :rotfl2:
