Verizon vs. Comcast

I'm currently a Comcast customer, and it seems like Verizon Fios is a better deal for the money.

I'd be curious to hear the experiences of anyone who has had both. My main goal here is to take my bundled package down lower than the $130/month I'm presently paying without a significant loss of services.

You will find a wide range of opinions on this and some people get down right evangelical. If price is all your worried about it's pretty simple to compare the packages and get pricing right on line.
If it's performance nobody can answer that because we don't live where you do. Cable especially and Fios to some extent are HEAVILY affected by your exact location. Even a few houses down can make a difference, a few blocks certainly will.
Your best bet is to ask your closest neighbors and see how theirs works.

I just made the switch from Comcast to Fios. It's a tad bit cheaper and I find that I get more channels. For instance, for the rate I was paying with Comcast I had no premium channels. For equal value at Fios I've added some. I also needed multi-room DVR and Comcast could not offer that to me. I would have had to buy a DVR for the three rooms that wanted to watch recorded shows.

I find the DVR remote much more user friendly and it operates better when you are fast forwarding through commercials. On Comcast, we constantly "over fast forwarded" past commercials and we always had to backtrack to get where we needed to be. On Fios there seems to be some mechanism to stop that.

I know a group of guys who work for Verizon, installing a lot of the FIOS lines and other stuff... all three of them have Comcast by choice, and they rag on Verizon (not wireless) all the time.

I switched from Comcast to FiOS in the Fall. There are marginal improvements in television service, but the only real significant enhancement is Internet, which is much faster. FiOS is a little more money than Comcast, but it gives you more. Indeed, Comcast offers a Family Package, which runs about $40 per month, here - and FiOS can't hold a candle to it, because their lowest level of television service is over $60 all-in. But if you like having "all" the channels other than premiums, then FiOS is worth the extra money.

-I have a Comcast HD Tivo; I know that Fios only has DVR and not Tivo, but how much HD recording time to you get on yours? Also, any feedback about the Tivo vs. DVR based on your experiences?

I'm looking at saving close to $40 a month for what seems to be a better overall deal, and it feels like it's too good to be true. I'm just trying to get other experiences....

When I got my first HDTV around December, I switched from Comcast to FIOS (since I had to unplug everything anyway!) Our internet would go out constantly with Comcast and we haven't had it go out ONCE since we switched. I think we got the basic internet service and it's very fast.

About the DVR time, when recording HD, it does NOT have a lot of recording time but I didn't have Comcast HD DVR so I don't know how that compares. I just watch and delete!

Have you ever had Tivo or just DVR? I've had Tivo for years now and I've never been a fan of the DVR setup.

No, I never had TIVO. I just had the DVR through Comcast. My son thinks we had more time on the Comcast DVR than the Verizon DVR. So far it hasn't been a problem. Well only a little since my husband has been recording the Tour De France and that's hogging a lot of time.

I have a TiVo Series 3; I get CableCARDs from FiOS, nothing more. The TiVo Series 3 is substantially better than either the Comcast TiVo or the FiOS DVR, afaic, though I have no personal experience with either.
