As of mid-April, 2005, Verizon Wireless has a new international roaming plan that allows you to use your domestic (US) tri-mode or digital phone to make/receive calls in certain other countries. Mexico (including most of the Cruise Ports) is on that list. You do not need the "special" GMS phone anymore. It looks like the rates are $0.69/minute "plus pass through of serving carrier's tolls, taxes and surcharges" (its that last part that concerns me...).
I've read the web site carefully, and it appears that the only pre-requisite is that you "set up" your phone via Customer Service before you leave, then set it back to domestic calls when you return. This has been true of a few Carribean countries before, but never to this extent.
Has anyone tried this new feature? This could be very handy in getting around those $$$ ship calls.
