I am reading that Verizon will be doing away with thier unlimited data plan this summer. I am thinking it may just be pertaining to the Iphone. Is this so, or will it be all of thier smartphones?

The store employees have suggested to me that it will be for all phones.

I think it's sad, I've really loved their service but they are going to quickly price themselves out of the market. I can already get the same phone service for half the price... and now they are going to up my bill because I actually use it?

There was talk before the iphone was released about that rumor, but normally with Verizon you are safe until you change your plan and then that's when you'd lose your unlimited date plan.

Yeah I am not looking forward to this. Our contract is up in February and I am sure we will lose it then. I am seriously thinking of changing carriers if this happens. We both use our data every day and I won't be able to handle not having the unlimited use.

Verizon is the most expensive in my area, and keeps on climbing. I don't have verizon but know a few people who do, they were talking about this and all said if Verizon start charging over x amount of MB's, they will be dropping them.

Dang it. Verizon is the only carrier in our area with decent reception, and we were psyched when they got iPhones and had hoped to splurge on iPhones next year. (DH has a tracfone, I'm on my sister's Verizon family plan.) We don't have data plans at the moment, and what's the point of getting an iPhone if it costs a fortune for the data plan?!

you should be ok even after your contract is up as long as you continue with them month to month but if you miss a payment or sign a new plan or upgrade your phone they will change your plan and then you'll loose the unlimited plan.

Ugh! I hope not! Right now I have a BlackBerry with Verizon. I have been with Verizon for years and prefer their service over all other carriers and in December I want to upgrade to the new iPhone but not if it will cost me a fortune!

They are going with the flow of the rest of the market...AT&T got rid of their unlimited data plan more than a year ago. If you already have an unlimited data plan it is going to be grandfathered in, you'll still have it unlimited.

Check your data usage. I was with AT&T when they got rid of unlimited. Turns out that despite using my iPhone all the time, I never came anywhere near even the lowest data plan.

I'm actually looking forward to tiered pricing for this reason. DH has a Droid but I've got just a touch screen phone with texting because we couldn't afford 2 unlimited data plans and with being a SAHM, I don't really *need* the internet access on my phone since I'm home all day.

But I reaaaallllllyyyyy want a Droid or Iphone like everyone else has (ok, fine, I just want it to play Angry Birds....), but I really won't be using it a ton. So the tiered pricing structure will probably put it into our price range.

This Is a stupid Question. Does this include texting? If so well have to switch. Online, not so much. Texting yes!

I wonder when they might do this? I'm curious to see what the tier pricing will be. I love having access to the internet. I wonder if it gives you advance notice if your reaching your data limit? I know it doesn't with texting.
If not, I will just switch back to my old plain jane cell phone and not have internet access. I love the gps though on my phone, but refuse to pay more than $30 per month for access

I have the 3GB data plan currently (had to get it in order to get a decent phone with the bigger screen & slide out keyboard that I wanted) and use it very, very minimally because I'm so afraid of going over the limit.

I work-at-home but had to go into the office for a couple of weeks & used it to check Facebook... I looked online once a day, for about 2 weeks. Came no where close to my data limit.

There's a way that you can check how much data you've used in the current month, but they definitely won't notify you if you're nearing your limit. At least currently. Who knows if that will change at all.

Guess we aren't getting iphones (or new phones) then! We'll stay with our Droid Incredibles even when our contract is up. DH abuses the heck out of his data plan!

I think they have something like this now. Its $10 for 75 MB.

There's all kinds of different stories about it on the internet. Some say it will only affect the 4g. Some say only the iphone. Some say all phones. Guess we will just have to wait and see!

I had an iPhone 3GS with AT&T for 2 years, and only one month did I go over the 1 gb threshold. I would consider myself a moderate-heavy user. Most things short of video/lots of HD pictures don't take much data. I'd be fine with a 2gb plan.

You can monitor your usage online just like minutes. That's how I'm starting to see it - minutes are tiered, too. Definitely not a deal-breaker for Verizon with me.

As long as you renew your current plan you'll be grandfathered in.

So when I upgrade from my Droid in April to an Iphone - I won't be able to keep my unlimited data plan?

I know with my mifi with verizon I get a txt msg sent to my phone when I've used 50% and 75% of my monthly allowment. I'm sure it's something I set up on line in my acct. but I am quite sure you could do this with phones also.
