My DH wants to get a room with a verandah is it worth the extra cost? We both have never cruised before and are thinking of going in Dec 04 on the 7 day western cruise. He wants to be able to sit outside and read if he wants. My thinking is just go to one of the decks and grab a chair. All opinions appreciated.

Also so far the cheapest I have found for category 5 or 6 with the verandah is around $1400 is that a good price? He is hoping for a price around $1200 - $1300.

As far as I am concerned it is worth every penney. Who wants to sit on deck with people all the time. Nothing better or more romantic than sitting out side in the evening. Oh so relaxing.Order room service for breakfast and sit out and enjoy the sounds and sights. I won't cruise any other way. You can always join the others on deck for pool time.

If you can afford the verandah room, it's worth it!

If the budget is really tight and the extra for the verandah is a hardship, then you'll still have a lovely time and be able to use the public deck areas.

If it's important to your DH, and the verandah will get a lot of use, then get it. I have cruised with and without the verandah, and I hardly used it so it wasn't really worth the extra cost to me.

Verandah..... A yes here also . If you are ever on an Alaska cruise it is an absolute must .

As my tag says have veranda will cruise! I love spending time on my veranda. I'm a morning person and up before DH so I like to go out there and read etc. In the evening there is nothing more peaceful than to spend some time out there with just the moon, the stars and the waves.

We didn't have a verandah on our first cruise, and we were quite satisfied. We were only there for four days, so we didn't spend much time in the room -- we were too busy doing other things!

However, we have decided that we will go with a Category 6 next time so that we WILL have the verandah. Why? We'll be going for seven days, so we'll probably spend a little more time in the cabin. Also, our girls are getting older, and it'll be nice for dad to have a place to "run to" when it's time for them to get dressed.

My opinion on the bottom line: A verandah is a nice but not essential.

The best time to be on your verandah is early morning and late at night. On each of our cruises we always started our day with an early morning room service of coffee, juice, bagels and cream cheese while waiting for the rest of our family to get up and then we all went to breakfast. A real treat that if you can swing the extra cost is DEFINATELY worth it.

If you can afford it...

GO FOR THE VERANDAH

Even if you never use it, it's still great. Your cabin will have a much more open feel to it, and will be a brighter in your room because you get to let the sun light in (with plenty of curtains for those times you don't want the sun light in. And it's really great to be able to step outside for a moment just before bed or just as you wake up before you've gotten ready for the day (or while you're waiting for that significant other to get ready).

I will never cruise without a verandah. I love it. Just makes the cruise experience that much better.

(Well, never say never, but if I am paying for the room, I want that verandah!)

i woke up every morning at 4 am and sat out on the verandah watching the docking....sounds weird i suppose but it's one of my fondest memories from the cruise....so relaxing sitting out there...
i definitely began to understand the attraction of owning a yacht...maybe in my next life i'll strike gold......

If you can afford it (especially on the 7-day), a verandah is awesome! As the others have said, it is so pleasant to enjoy breakfast outside and to relax and have some private time out there away from the crowds. I also love to spend a few minutes outside before retiring at night, just looking at the moon and the ocean.
But for a shorter cruise, or if you need to save money, you can have a wonderful trip without one. You can always use the "secret" deck 7 aft verandah, which is rarely crowded, or the cushy chairs on deck 4. When we did our three-peat on the Wonder last year, we had an inside stateroom and we divided our time between the public decks and the Rainforest (those heated tile loungers are a great place to curl up with a good book). Although my preference would have been a verandah, it wasn't bad at all not to have one.
Whichever way you go, you'll have fun...but of course the verandah makes it even more fun!

I agree 100%. 1st cruise we had a window, 2nd cruise veranda, 3rd cruise veranda, 4th cruise is booked with a veranda. :)

There was not a day that we weren't on the veranda. We enjoyed morning coffee everyday and sometimes breakfast, and every night before going to sleep was great to sit on the veranda relaxing.
On our 2nd cruise we were on the veranda a short time after sailing watching 6 dolphins below us.

Our first cruise was on a verandah. It was nice but we were so seldom in our room (just to sleep a little) we didn't think that it justified the cost. Our next cruises have been inside.

We have choosen to save the money for extra "stuff" to take home. We bring an empty suitcase!

Yes, for all reasons - we caught colds while at WDW last December and it was wonderful to sit on the verandah and relax in the quiet. Also, we chose to stay in our cabin and it was wonderful to be able to look outside and see the ocean - rather than stay in an inside room with just walls and TV.

Best wishes, and Merry Christmas!

On our first DCL cruise, we had a veranda. It was July to August, and was 106 degrees when we left port. We couldn't use the verandah because it was way too hot. Just touching the railing was nasty.

Our first 2 cruises (RCCL) we did not have a verandah , the wife loved both cruises . Cruise # 3 (still RCCL) we decided to splurge an got a cabin with a verandah . The only problem with the verandah that I know of is the wife will not cruise without one now . " Honey , want to go on a cruise " ?........"Only if the cabin has a verandah " she replies . I say "But hon , we can save X # $$ if we don't get a verandah ". " If we can't afford the verandah then we can't afford the cruise " she replies .

I like a cabin with a verandah , but with the wife its a no-go without it item . In Ocho Rios she stayed on the verandah the entire day reading a book , never got off the ship .
