As long as the size is appropriate for a carryon (fits under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment) according to your airline you are good to go.
I have used both the weekender and the duffle. The important thing is to not fill either to the brim. Since they are soft sided you can usually squish them into the tester bin. They usually fit up top but I've had a loosely packed weekender fit under the seat before.
I have the large duffle and have used it with both Spirit and Delta - on the return trips (like this past Sunday!) it was completely full (to the point of no squishing it down) and it still fit up top without a problem and I was never questioned about it when boarding.
My wife uses the large Vera Bradley duffel all of the time. It was stuffed full yesterday on our MCO-DCA flight on Southwest. If fit in the overhead compartment with no issue at all, straight in as well.
I have 2 of the large Vera duffels and have used at least one as a carryon when flying both JetBlue and Southwest. They are perfect because they hold a ton but still squish to fit wherever needed. I just wish they had a crossbody length shoulder strap for easier carrying.
