Well, I'm not counting on anything - this morning the HR screener called out of the blue with a quick quiz given to her by the hiring manager... I was not prepared and anxiety set in. Ugh. Flopsy mopsy.

Twinklebug, I'm of the opinion that everything happens for a reason and you will find a job when the time is right.

I lost my last job because the contract ran out and the state didn't pass a new budget for over 100 days. On my last day, my MIL fell in her kitchen and found out that she had a brain tumor. She was operated on the next day and I believe it was my responsibility to help take care of her and that's why I lost my job. While I had been looking as she convalesced, nothing came up and when she went back to work I thought I'd find something then.

Well, then my sister found out she had cancer. It's finally to the point that she doesn't need me to help like she did, so I'm hoping that this means that I can finally be chosen for a job.

I had a recruiter call last week and I had a technical interview over the phone that went very well. My resume is with the employer now and we're waiting to hear if I get an in person interview. I am praying night and day that this will be the right job at the right time for me. If not, I'm confident that there is something out there that will be right for me when the time is right.

I agree, when the time is right the right job will come. Totally amazed at all you've been though. Your family must be very close. I hope your interview comes through and all goes well!

Those technical quizzes can be tough - last time I was given one I was told flat out "Everyone fails this, but we have to give it anyway." It was in Python, a technology I've only ready about Yea, I failed big time but they gave me the job anyway.

I see this from the other side. I post ads on Craigslist and Careerbuilder. My Craigslist ads are not minimum wage and I include the benefits we provide.

I request salary requirements and very rarely get them. Why waste both our time if you want more than the job pays?

My company prefers to hire on the low end of the budget and then be able to give a raise in a few months if things are going well. We do not tell the new hire this because we will not give a raise unless the employee is performing highly.

I am amazed by how many people decline our job offers because unemployment pays more. Unemployment is going to run out and jobs are scarce so it seems like poor planning to me but we just move on to the next applicant.

"Unemployment pays more" might just be a line they're giving you and not reality. I'm curious why anyone would be applying for a position that pays less than half of their previous position unless they're aware that they were astronomically overpaid before and are willing to come down to earth. Like that's likely.

Sometimes it's near impossible to tell from the job description and title who exactly the company is targeting as candidates. It sounds to me like your company is looking for entry level folk. Do you state the experience level required in the postings? For example: a Programmer Analyst position could be for level I, II, III or IV. Big difference in experience, expectations and pay, but very hard to tell from the job description which may include the same technologies and similar job duties for all four.

Then again, chances are if someone can't follow simple directions when applying for a job (include salary requirements) that they might not be very good with following directions within the company either.

I went to my new job for a few hours today to "train". I won't be staying. The office was very unorganized, teens are hired to do filing, so that is all screwed up (not that I am saying that teens are bad, but these teens were). Everyone is new or has only been there a month (a bad sign) other than the owners and the lady who was suppose to train me. I also overheard the office manager talking to the owner bad mouthing a receptionist (they were right next to me).

I did get a call back from the HR woman - the manager wants to interview me. Now I've got the jitters. I keep reminding myself to just represent who I am and not who they want me to be. My best trait: I learn and adapt. After this morning's fiasco of a call I'm giving myself a day to work on refreshing my interview skills and ability to answer those tech questions with my own intelligence and not that of a 2 year old before I talk with him.

Just had the technical (phone) interview with the hiring manager, and despite having laryngitis I think this looks like a great fit for both their needs and my skills. He said he'd like to meet me in person next week Seems like a great guy to work with - he knew what he was talking about and very nice.

On another note, I got a message last night that one of my older interviews wants me to come in to meet me in person sometime next week also.

I love this! Wouldn't it be great to be able to choose between two job offers at the same time? OK, counting chickens before they're hatched... going to calm down and send out 2 new resumes today, and see the doc for some antibiotics to get my voice back (it was horrible!)

Well it pays to be picky even in this economy, I was interviewing this week with two different companies. Both made me job offers on the same day. One for 50% more than I was making at my last job and great benefits. Super excited and I start on the 13th.

I was an IT Trainer and Consultant with a local company for 9 years. Then the company got bought out and all the consultants became redundant ("We already have a group that does that"). Lost my job in the beginning of June of 2008.

I spent the summer doing contract work while searching for a full-time position. I got called by a recruiter about two weeks after I lost my job for a new position being created for a company. I went thru two phone screens, a face-to-face with the manager and two other employees for a couple of hours, another face-to-face with the Director, then a face-to-face with HR. It started the first week of July, I started work in September. I have been there two years now, and was recently promoted to team lead for the Windows Server team.

If you are going thru a long interview process with long delays between interviews, keep calling them for status updates and to let them know you are still interested.

As for being low-balled on salaries: I was once offered the position of managing the email systems for a state agency with more than 80,000 mailboxes, with over 50 servers in production and another 50+ in their disaster recovery site. They knew I knew the product as I was the consultant that got called in to their environment to help them upgrade, troubleshoot problems, etc, plus I taught the product to the staff there. They offered me $25,000 less than what I was earning at the time. "We really want you here and think this would be a good fit for both you and us." Um, yeah - good for you maybe, but I can't afford to lose over $2K per month in income. They never did fill that position. I ran into the hiring manager (another former student of mine) about a year ago at a local watering hole and he told me "We couldn't find anyone to take the position. They all wanted more money."
