Vent about thick mattresses

We have a queen size mattress set that is a little on the thicker/taller side. I recently bought a queen size bedding set, and the duvet doesn't cover enough of sides of the mattress. So I returned it and got a king size instead -now that one is too long! UGGH!! Almost all newer mattresses are taller than what they used to be - why can't bedding comepensate for it? I think I'm going to keep the king and just alter it to fit.

You need to shop where the sets are advertised to fit the taller mattresses. I find these at Hecht's, Macy's, and even Sears sometimes. It will say right on the set that they fit the newer tallers mattresses.

Thanks! I will definitely check those places out. I never even though about it when I bought our mattresses, but it seemed they were all tall like that when we were shopping around.

I agree. It's very annoying. I have some Laura Ashley sheets that do not fit around my queen size bed. I have had luck with the Lands End flannel sheets...not sure if their cotton or blends would fit but I would think so! I'm using flannels now but I may try the cotton soon!

Make sure you pick a true queen size and not a full/queen. I'm not absolutely certain, but I think the full/queen will be slightly smaller than the regular queen.

I have had better luck with bed spreads as opposed to comforters with dust ruffles when it comes to fit

Wanted to add that when buying comforters and bedspreads to make sure and look at the measurements. There is a catalog that I always get in the mail called Domestications. It really has some low quality bed stuff in it. It is also priced cheap. If you look at their measurements for a queen or whatever size duvet and then look at a same size duvet from the Penney's catalog you will see a huge size difference. We use king and there is always at least an 8 inch difference in size. The lower the cost, the less material used.

Also, when buying sheets, if you look for a high thread count (350 or more) they usually fit the bigger mattresses. I get mine at JC Penney.

I had to measure the height of my mattress so I could find sheets that fit. I have to buy 18-21 inch..these are kinda hard to find and when you do they are expensive.

Also look for sheet sets that are advertised as being for "thicker mattresses". We run into the same problem with our king mattress which has a pillow top and the newer queen mattress we bought for our son.

We have also had very good luck buying reasonably priced sets at outlet stores like Wamsutta etc. who seem to stock more of the speciality sets: thicker mattresses, long twin (college mattresses) and higher count sheets for great prices.

You could also try those "sheet extenders" or hooks you attach to sheet corners to hold them on. We do that with our cheaper sheet sets and those that shrink over time. You can find them at Bed, Bath and Beyond etc

Good luck!.

Most bed linen manufacturers make sheets for what they call "extra deep" mattresses.

I also found that buying a king size comforter for a queen size bed gave me more "hang" on the sides, which I like. Of course, that means that you can't buy those bed-in-a-bag things, which usually include the dust ruffle, comforter, and pillow shams, and tend to be less expensive.

A good website for this kind of stuff is domestications.com. I have purchased stuff from them, found it to be of decent quality and not terrible over-the-top in terms of expense.

You really need to watch Domestications. They are cheap quality which is why they are cheap in price. Compare sizes of their comforters to sizes in better stores and you will see how much smaller they are. That place saves money by putting less material in the stuff they sell. I'd much rather pay a little more and get quality. Honestly, stay away from it if you want a queen comforter to fit your queen bed. You won't get it at Domestications.

Hmmm.... but they might work if I want a king comforter to fit my queen bed with a thick mattress! I don't have problems finding sheets to fit the mattress, but have looked for a comforter forever it seems. Seriously, I'll check Domestications and their king measurements because I"m at a loss otherwise.
Thanks!

They might work but you still have the same poorly made comforter whether it fits or not. Why do you think that stuff is so darn cheap? It's junk!

Yeah, you're right. Once they go thru the wash it could be over.
Darn. Back to the drawing board....

I'm sorry! My post did come across as rude. I didn't mean it that way. I just have been burnt by Domestications with a comforter that fell apart. I then warned two other people about them and yet they still bought from them. Both had problems. My mom bought flannel sheets from them. They were cute holiday sheets. They pilled after 3 days of use. My neighbor bought a comforter set. She washed her comforter after a week use due to a kid spilling washable paint on it. The comforter fell apart at the seams. So I kind of make it my mission to tell all that ask that Domestications is horrible! LOL!

Wow, that's interesting to read about Domestications. My mom used to buy all my bedding there when I was a kid and I'm 25 and she still uses all those sheets on the guest bed. They held up pretty well for us, but she hasn't bought anything there in at least 10 years so maybe their quality decline has been since then.

Oh no - I didn't take it that way, nor mean to denegrate Domestications to the extent that I came across! :guilty: But I really do need a comforter that will hold up and wash well..... we have a big lab who's either sleeping on the bed or against the side of it so our bedpreads take some abuse.

OK, figured this out last nite = google "oversized comforters" you will get hits on ones made for the taller mattresses. There are LOTS of them in plain goose down, and a few in patterns but I haven't yet found a brand that seems to offer "oversized" as an option for most of their line. Still haven't found one I want however so the quest continues :rolleyes2
