Just need to get this off my chest:mad::headache::headache::headache:

I have a friend, well actually the mother of a friend of my DDs. We went to the mall to do some school shopping, and I had to bite my tongue so bad I thought it was going to bleed.

She complained constantly about not having a double stroller for her 3 y.o. and 6 month old. Well, I thought, for the price of that Coach diaper bag you are carrying you could have bought one.:rolleyes1

Won't buy DD a new backpack for high school because she "can't afford it, right now". The girl is carrying the same backpack that she has carried for the past 2 years, and it was given to her by my DD who carried it for at least that long. I don't believe the kid NEEDS a new backpack every year, or even 2 if it is still in good shape. HOWEVER, do not tell your DD you can't afford a $20 backpack, when you are carrying a cute little Coach bag that matches the Coach diaper bag I mentioned earlier.:rolleyes1

And BTW, she did not recieve either of those items as a gift. (she texted pics of them to me the day she bought them), and talked about how she knew it was a splurge.

There---VENT over. I fell much better:goodvibes Carry On!

next time she says she can't afford it now, tell her coach bags sell great on ebay :thumbsup2

She doesn't DIS does she because there are people here planning Disney trips but missing bill payments because they cannot afford to do both.

I knew by reading this statement that I had missed some drama on the Budget board; boy did I ever!!!

They are crabby over there!

Sometimes adults do deserve splurges. Just because she has a COACH bag and diaper bag does not mean she neglects her children. Maybe she always buys them things and wanted something for herself for a change. Definitely not enough info for me to judge.

When you can't afford a backpack for your kid your splurge should be a latte or a fancy pastry not a coach diaper bag-ouch that must have cost a few pennies!

Maybe the backpack is in perfectly good shape and she doesn't want to buy a new one. I have used "we can't afford it" on my kids just because I didn't want to buy it. Like I said, not enough information to judge.

coach diaper bags are $350-$500. Maybe its a fake!

OP stated the friend bought them for herself. Therefore, they were not gifts. Friend texted pics when she purchased the items and referred to them as "splurges."

The day I splurge on myself and get a Coach diaper bag and purse when my DD is using a 4 year old hand me down backpack will be a cold day in hell.

Well, if the backpack is still in good condition after four years, it really doesn't need to be replaced.

What's ridiculous in this whole situation is the money complaints from the friend. It's fine to splurge (designer diaper bag), but then don't gripe when you can't afford necessities (double stroller).

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I use the 'we can't afford it' on my kids sometimes too. Just because I don't want to get into a long thing about why I don't feel like buying them xyz right now.

We can't afford it might not mean we can't afford it, it might mean, "I'd rather not waste my money on that crappy thing that I know will fall apart 15 minutes after I buy it" , or "I won't be able to look at that damn miley cyrus backpack every morning without throwing up on it" , or "I'd rather spend that $20 taking you on a surprise trip to the zoo next week". Just because I say "We can't afford it" doesn't mean that we can't afford it.

My dd has an LL Bean backpack that will probably last her though HS. She got in in 7th grade and this is yr 2 of the backpack.

I find it funny you were shopping at the mall for school. If she is so strapped then mall shopping probably should not even be on her radar.

Sounds like excuses to me.:confused3

Yup, ya gotta wonder about people;) FWIW, I do think it's important that Moms splurge on themselves every so often, although I don't consider a diaper bag a splurge at any cost:laughing: and I do think that kids should carry their backpacks for at least a few years if there's nothing wrong with them.

An acquaintance at work the other day asked if she could order "shoes for crews" for her 9 and 11 year olds because she couldn't afford new shoes for school. The program allows you to break up the payment in three installments which is taken directly from your paycheck. But....these shoes are dog ugly:sad2: and I won't wear them myself never mind put my daughter in them. And, they start at $40:scared1:

I went home that night and thought to myself "I think I'll got to Marshalls and get her two girls each a pair of Converse sneakers for $25 when I pick up my check". Yeah, until for the next three days I watched her and another girl go out for lunch EVERY day and figured those three lunches would have paid for a pair of sneakers! Some people just don't have a clue:sad1:

Is the bag something she splurged for within the past week or so? I know I have splurged at times and treated myself (I only have furbabies though!!) and then receive some unexpected bill or something.

But if she knew she didn't have the money for strollers, etc., and still bought the bag, then that was silly.

However, you can get coach bags at some dirt low prices at the outlets.

To answer the questions brought up. No outlet. Bought at coach store, because she had them send over the small bag so she could have it to match the diaper bag, and went back to pick it up the next day.

The backpack probably is in great shape. It wasn't cheap when I bought it 4 years ago. My point is, her daughter is in high school and not stupid. She is old enough to be told something and have a conversation about. She could have said that to her 13 Y.O. rather than try and snow her with crap about not affording a new one, when her daughter knows full well how much Coach bags cost.

It wasn't a crappy hannah montana backpack or anything like. It was actually a great deal. Jansport on sale at a sporting goods store.

She has been wanting a double stroller since she was pregnant with her now 6 month old baby. It was on her registry.

Again, just a vent. I didn't and won't lose sleep about it.;):)
